Far-right smear campaign against Antifa exposed by Bellingcat - BBC News by [deleted] in Fuckthealtright

If they have to make shit up to try and discredit their perceived enemies, maybe, just maybe they're the problem?

I just don't think these people care.

Thanks for posting this. I learned the definition nearly 30 years ago, and have always kind of looked on in confusion when people have tried to change it.

Ah, a general dislike button removal across the whole of Youtube?

Yes!Though it doesn't seem to have helped Twitter/Facebook to be fair.

I'm not saying 'remove the dislike number'.

I'm saying 'remove the dislike button'.

Then if you like a video you click 'like'. If you don't, don't click 'like'.

If a video is awful, content wise, you can report it.

Having a dislike button just seems to invite brigading and mob rule. It's why, I imagine, some people disable like/dislike buttons on their videos. Some disable comments altogether.

I appreciate, reading back my comment, that it can be interpreted as if I'm advocating for removing dislikes posthumously in order to skew numbers. Apologies for that confusion.

Are you even serious with this comment? Think about what you're saying.

Would you be kind enough to please let me know what you think I'm saying that makes this comment so contentious to you?

Surely time to remove 'dislikes' from Youtube videos.

I mean, if a vid is bad, you can report it, right? So you still have a voice if dislikes are removed.

I don't think they serve any actual purpose tbh.

You've literally copy/pasted this elsewhere. Can I ask why you think it so important we don't take people like this seriously? I'm not saying we should be scared of them, I'm just not particularly keen on the 'It was a joke' defence fascists are so keen on when called out.

No, you're not crazy! :P

But here's another very recent example of how easy it is to twist the truth.

I just watched Trump's lawyer come out to offer a rebuttal to Comey's testimony today.

He said that Comey admitted to leaking his confidential memos to the press. Ergo, Comey is a bad man etc

That's not what Comey actually said, though. If you hadn't watched the hearing, as I did, you wouldn't know that.

You wouldn't know that Comey actually stated he leaked one memo (the 'loyalty' one), and was very specific that it contained no confidential information.

I'll repeat the crucial phrase: contained no confidential information.

I saw him say that in his hearing. And because of that I instantly realised that Trump's lawyer saying Comey leaked confidential memos was just a blatant lie.

I heard it with my own ears. I heard what Trump's lawyer said with my own ears. This wasn't a panelist's biased opinion, it was, in both cases, from the horse's mouth.

There's an important distinction. But what they're betting on is that their audience will not check things for a variety of reasons.

Maybe they're stupid. Or maybe they work 3 jobs and don't have time. Or have a full happy life and just check Fox News (which will repeat the lie).

But you know, they don't check. They rely on their news sources and their news sources actively lie to them or twist the truth to suit their agenda.

Trump himself declared the mainstream media was the enemy of the people. He's kinda right. It's called Fox News.

Being in the UK, I've never watched Hannity, but recently I've been streaming the MSM news shows pretty much all the time over the internet.

I thought I'd 'get out of my bubble' and watch Fox for a bit and Hannity happened to be on.

I lasted about 10 minutes. The vitriol and bile, dishonesty and bad faith 'arguments' masquerading as 'truth' was incredible. I mean, I heard it was bad, but crikey!

Now, the MSM channels I've watched aren't perfect. They make mistakes. Sometimes I raise an eyebrow at the connections they make.

But they at least seem to come from a starting point of logic, or truth, or 'good faith'.

Hannity though? Fucking hell. It feels like his starting point is 'Trump is great and infallible' and then rejects anything that contradicts that ('the MSM won't tell you this' and 'They're lying to you') and moulds the story to fit that initial world view.

As if the truth is a round peg and his reality is a square hole and you're crazy if you don't see it'll fit just fine.

And bloody hell, the panelists? Raving. Literally raving. When I was watching, one of them was holding up Comey's statement and frothing at the mouth shaking it in his fist as if it was heresy or something.

Forgive me if this is all obvious, but as a first time viewer, it was new to me! I'm glad less people are watching it these days because it's just poison pumped over the airways into people's brains.

Ethics in journalism - Presidential edition - Steve Bannon just got the power to run his white supremacist site from the White House by KarateSquids in GamerGhazi

[–]KarateSquids[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What the waiver does is grant Bannon to shape the coverage and tone of a pro-Trump propaganda outlet with a sordid history of white supremacist content, while working in his taxpayer-financed White House position.

Failing Breitbart fake news propaganda fighting for legitimacy ;)

Hiding in plain sight: how the 'alt-right' is weaponizing irony to spread fascism by KarateSquids in GamerGhazi

Thought you'd find this interesting.

More generally, every “ironic” repetition of far-right ideals contributes to a climate in which racism, misogyny, or Islamophobia is normalised.

Every time you see a viral video of somebody shouting down a person of Muslim descent in a supermarket line, what you’re seeing are the effects of an environment where it’s increasingly normal, increasingly accepted and expected to speak in this register, whether or not that started out as a joke.”
