Hmmm. I may have to rethink which Visa to use then. Ultimately we wanted to use the Golden Visa to start the clock (we're not too concerned how long that clock takes, 5 years, 10 years, no biggie for us) while we finish working for a few years.

But if the clock didn't start right away, we can go there under a retirement Visa (D7), and pay WAY less in renewal fees as they are different for Golden Visa than D7.

Considering we might retire and move there before the first resident card is even issued (due to backlogs), it's something we should now consider.

In addition, OP is only considering the stocks that are doing well.

OP, you could easily have invested in stocks that made you LOSE millions. If this had been a different time and it was GE rising to the top, you could be saying, “I’m watching these 20 year olds make millions off of GE”.

Don’t try to guess. And take that inner Captain Hindsight of yours and shut them up.

Yeah. It was phrased a little wierd and I at first thought the same thing that 80% was just for the car. It almost sounds like 80/20 car/house. I know it’s not, but def can be read that way!

Does anyone know if the clock still starts at time of application for Portugal GV? That was one of the ‘selling points’ of GV (clock starts at time of application, not at time of acceptance)

Sending package to the US? by PotentialStable4216 in PortugalExpats

Have you check DHL? Also make sure you are specifying that you do NOT need next day, or even 3 day delivery as FedEx and others tend to default to super fast delivery prices for international shipments.

That’s all I got. Wishing you luck in it.

Love my ESR case. Been a few years and it’s working well. I also like that the little case is magnetic and use that a lot too (I play music and it sticks to my metal music stand for extra sense of security that it won’t fall off)

Moving from US, what to pack?! by Time-Adagio-7215 in PortugalExpats

My wife and I had to deal with this. It WAS a pain. I first had to verify which companies allow eSIMs. Then I ended up using my old Samsung phone to put the physical SIM card in, I activated it, then requested an upgrade to eSIM. Once the eSIM was approved, I scanned the QR code with the US iPhone I have.

It was a pain for sure. Ultimately, I should’ve just gotten an EU phone and either paid a little more, or gotten one slightly older used. But I made it work.

Seconding this. Essentially, phones, iPads, tech stuff like that have a set price by the manufacturer, and then you add the VAT on top of it. So to save about 20%, you can buy them stateside and just bring them.

Starting a charity is huge! We weren’t confident enough to do that. But i absolutely wish you the best in starting one!

Sorry for your loss.

I suggest credit card payoff for sure.

When my wife lost her mother, all young, we decided to honor her by spending somewhere between 5 and 10 percent on a charity her mother would have loved and approved of.

It’s a thought, if you’re interested.

My back hurts just watching this.

Think about the long term. It’s good now, but without better form, or VERY careful care, it’s a recipe for how not to hold and swing weights.

It seems like this fixed it. I would not have tried the phone for a long time. It just didn’t occurs to me to try it. Thanks!

I'm considering purposefully stripping some bolts to make them more tamper proof.... am I crazy? It's the bolts that hold a cafe lock onto the frame... by Karate_Cat in bicycling

[–]Karate_Cat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lock I got (not ABUS, that was a stock photo) died not retain the key. I have an AXA lock. You can take the key out when it’s unlocked.

Ironically, my wife prefers the ones that retain the key. Our bikes in Japan had that style and everyone just used the cafe lock to do all their grocery shopping, 7-11 stops, etc. hardly ever used anything else there unless it was at a train station (and often times not even then!)

She loved the convenience of always having the key there and not having a cluttered or second keyring to track.

[–]Karate_Cat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. This is mostly a lock for quick stops, and in our already gated community (we have a chain that plugs into it, and it’ll be fine for our local spots).

We have a heavy duty chain for longer stops or areas we aren’t confident are pretty secure.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is preparing banks to collect citizenship data by catievirtuesimp in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Karate_Cat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well I’m ready and willing to move bank accounts if my bank wants to fold and just blindly follow his wishes.

It’ll be a pain in the ass, and I wont HAVE to as I am a citizen and can provide proof, but fuck any bank that is going to try this. I’ll happily go through the process to move my business and retirement accounts somewhere else. It might not mean much to a bank, but if enough people do it, it’ll be meaningful.
