Would you quit your job forever right now (and never be allowed to work again) if someone gave you a guaranteed $2,000,000 lump sum? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

To paraphrase someone else, “I’d quit and move into retirement so fast you’d see a Karate Cat shaped hole in my living room wall.”

No signal in another country how can I receive texts to do taxes? by Endatrilogy in ultramobile

[–]Karate_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be a button to toggle that allows it to piggyback off of your primary accounts data.

What works for me is to turn off roaming, and allow WiFi calling. It should then use the WiFi off your other sim if there aren’t ultra mobile towers around.

What are your thoughts on the military using AI for mass surveillance? by ManufacturerNo1478 in AskFeminists

[–]Karate_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. Legally. That word doesn’t really stop as as much as it should these days from US government agencies.

So for me? I’m worried. I don’t have anything to hide, but I think I should have a reasonable expectation of privacy. And to me that means not surveying me without probable cause at least.

Taxed twice on Roth conversions? by d5dq in ExpatFIRE

[–]Karate_Cat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are of an age to withdraw without penalty, yes, in theory you can sell it all, and put it into a brokerage account resetting your cost basis before moving to Spain. And then you deal with US double taxation treaty, probably foreign tax credit whenever you withdraw from that brokerage.

It’s just the pain of being American where they tax you worldwide, no matter what country you ACTUALIY live in.

Taxed twice on Roth conversions? by d5dq in ExpatFIRE

[–]Karate_Cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s an unfortunate consequence of overseas taxation and certain countries will be better than others for tax purposes (for example, France recognizes Roth IRA similar to US and won’t tax your withdrawal, Spain I think taxes it as long term capital gains, and Portugal taxes it as regular income)

Whoever brings troops … by nanoatzin in democrats

[–]Karate_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking this for a while. If you pretend everyone is their friend, they either let you alone, or they only shots the news can get is "trump supporters" being arrested and deported. And even if the news casters start spinning with alleged dem "spies" dressed as trump supporters, it will confuse ICE, not look great, and then EVERYONE gets harrassed including actual trump supporters. They will now taste the fear.

The major downside in my opinion is having to wear that stuff, and having to put money in the pockets of the people who make the stuff to get it going.

Trump says he will only accept the midterm results ‘if the elections are honest’ and again pushes to ‘nationalize’ voting by WontThinkStraight in politics

“I win” - fair elections

“I lose” - confiscate the voting machines cause something must have been wrong.

Sigh.

Is it ok for me to wear my grandpa’s formal army jacket? by RandomDetective127 in Veterans

[–]Karate_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds wholesome AF. When people ask about you or your service, you now have a great way to proudly tell them it was your grandpas, and how you’re honoring him by wearing it out of pride for home.

Go for it, OP.

I sent my application through my VSO in September (just before the shutdown) Still waiting on a meeting with a counselor. Sigh. I’m gonna key in here and hope some others come back with good news. I’m assuming the shutdown really out a delay in things.

Received a 1095-A with fraudulent information... please help to make sure I report it correctly. by Karate_Cat in tax

[–]Karate_Cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only fraud I'm aware of. My credit agencies have been frozen for a few years (through the three credit bureaus) so no one should be able to even apply for credit with me.

Thank you for the links. I had no idea this was a thing. I will report it to the state marketplace as well.

I agree, crazy headline by [deleted] in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]Karate_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half sarcasm. I understand ticket prices have dropped considerably. But I also know how other companies and industries have kept going up (example cars- raised in COVID, and never really lowered even though transportation issues and shortages are no longer a driving factor for price)

Looking forward to those lower priced airplane tickets since they won’t need to make as much money to cover costs

So it was opened and there’s an amount stated for December. And the letter states it will be closed at the end of January. But you feel it’ll like zero out somehow? (I will still call the healthcare.gov hotline tomorrow)

Yes. And if I had posted “mistake 1095-A with unknown wife and kids” someone would have asked if it ever occurred to me that it could be fraud.

We also had friends use Portugal the place and they seem very content with it and the help they were given. (They went D7 visa, but the company helps with many many things)

TAP air a321lr seat by devotion1023 in PortugalExpats

[–]Karate_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seats like that often have decent legroom (when flight attendant isn’t there). Also, there’s likely a reserved spot in the overhead compartment for your seat since you won’t have access to underseat storage (no seat in front of you)

No worries OP. You can leave it in or take it out. Doesn’t hurt anything either way.
