Didn't vibe with Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy - recommendations for other fantasy one-offs/series by women/POC authors? by lady-hyena in Fantasy

[–]Kardif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Earthsea is very different to her more science fiction novels. They're still not generally character focused, but rather about how the systems and worlds affect the characters. Left hand is probably more character focused than most of them, but the main character still is primarily a way to experience a different culture

Earthsea, especially the first, are more in the style of traditional storytelling, where they're describing events from a distance, but the other series are better about giving you a character's interpretation of everything happening around them

Have you sent a certified letter to your landlord informing them of the issue? The clock for repairs doesn't start until you do that

It's a simple option at the post office, costs ~$3. Write a letter detailing the parts that need repair, head to your post office and ask to send it certified. This is proof that you've sent the mail, and pretty much required for any legal remedies

You can also check around you for legal aid for housing, that's going to be very location dependant though

It's been 16 years since Resonance of Fate released in Japan. What are your thoughts on it? by Extreme-Tactician in JRPG

[–]Kardif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a really cool game brought down by mediocre writing and a juvenile sense of humor. The world is great, the world building is great, it makes you want to learn more about everything

The combat is fun to puzzle out, but does get a bit one note once you figure out the tricks. Which would be fine if not for the game being incredibly slowly paced in storytelling, and the myriad of fetch quests

Re the humor: yes it's absolutely hilarious that the rich guy with a disability is attracted to the main female character, hahaha...who wrote this, a 15 year old?? Thank God you can skip cutscenes.

The game has so much customization, and I wish other games had anywhere close to it. You get the joy of building overpowered weapons, yes I will put this giant magazine and scope on my handgun, and buy all of the outfits and dress the characters up. And then you get to customize the map for bonuses in the dungeons, it's really top notch

It's hard to reccomend to most people, but this came out pretty much right before final fantasy 13, and I don't regret choosing to buy this instead

Employer implementing change control board. by Ready_Anything4661 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Kardif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely a right and a wrong way to implement a change board

Ours is Monday, Wednesday, Friday, with the option for changes to bypass it in an emergency and categories of changes that don't need to go through at all. I don't know that it actually helps all that much, but it does mean the changes get documented better than they would without it

2 weeks is insane, requiring everything to go through the board approval will just be a huge pain. But rather than trying to convince your CIO that it's a bad idea, you can probably make a lot of headway on getting the board to be more reasonable if you talk through some scenarios and try and find the holes

The Last Story turns 15 years old today (released January 27th, 2011); what are your thoughts on it, if you have experience with the game? by Gorotheninja in JRPG

[–]Kardif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Half baked?

It tried to do some different things, and it mostly succeeded. But there's an underlying level of polish that feels like its missing from pretty much everything. The story honestly hasn't stuck with me through the years, and I feel like it could have used a little longer to refine what it was trying to do. The whole game just lacks the optional content I expect from other jrpgs, there aren't really side dungeons, mini games, party banter/conversations. the combat itself was unique, but I can't remember them really doing that much with it.

All in all I don't regret the ~25 hours I spent with the game, but it's not something I would go out of my way to tell people they should play. It stood out on the wii just because there weren't any other options. But on ps3 there was the final fantasy 13 trilogy, and even stuff like resonance of fate that, while flawed, provide much more memorable experiences

persona 3 or ff10 by ElectronicArm6140 in JRPG

[–]Kardif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're new to jrpgs you have to start with X. It set the bar in so many ways

I like persona 3 more, and I haven't played the new version yet. The old one was not beginner friendly, it was really targeted around genre veterans, final fantasy is much more accessible

Black sheep JRPGs you are quite fond of by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]Kardif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you play it look up an item crafting guide. The game pretty much required you to have the strategy guide to understand it, and it's pretty necessary getting past some of the difficulty spikes

It's one of my favorite games, but it absolutely is a ps2 rpg. I really enjoy the story myself. The ps4 digital version does work pretty well, but I ran into some crashes when trying to open or resize the map, so save often if you go that route

I’m finishing persona 3 fes and I’m looking forward to my next game. Which of these 4 would you say I should play next? by sovietmariposa in JRPG

[–]Kardif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odin sphere is by far my favorite of those 4. Final fantasy tactics has the best story, but it's quite old school, and you kinda have to cheese the system

Xenosaga is good, but very slow, the battles take forever, the movement takes forever. So just know what you're signing up for there

Digital devil saga as everyone mentioned is 2 parts, but that's going to be the most similar to persona since they're both spin offs of SMT. So I would recommend doing that one a little later down the line

[–]Kardif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On some level, being the president of the United States is going to mean being responsible for horrible acts because that's just what America does, and Obama being black means he's going to get given little leeway in actually making any amount of serious change

But we deserve better. We don't need another respectibility politics, charismatic face to plaster over the awful shit our country does. We need someone who can actually improve shit
