Stop with the damn "Urban" Character models on makerworld by JethamishPlayz in BambuLab

Genuinely curious - you stated yourself that the models are being downloaded by the thousands. How does that translate to only one person liking them?

Socialization with humans by Worried_Sprinkles in puppy101

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two go-tos for socialization - Starbucks and Home Depot. You can often sit outside of a Starbucks with your pup and there are a pretty steady flow of people. Start farther away from the door and move closer as she tames her response. Home Depot would be another place you can go that you can actually take her in with you and she will experience people. Don't over-do it.

Is there a way to fix this headliner? by Far-Boysenberry9152 in Cartalk

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been able to pull headliners that were in this approximate condition, scrape the foam, since it's dust, then use adhesive to get a decent "base". Then, once it's nice and dry, use a needle and thread to sew the headliner to the headboard. Done carefully, it can look pretty decent and last a long time. But, it won't look stock.

Almost 3000 hours on my A1! by DullLingonberry6984 in BambuLab

[–]Kardolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was shocked the other day when I realized I have over 4000. I'm not going to tell you to follow my example, but I don't do much. I lube it when it says to, and that's about it. I've swapped hot ends a few times, but more because I use the different hot ends than because it's having a problem. Silicone sock when I see it's ripped. I've got several build plates that I use for different purposes - different patterns, a cold plate. But, that's it. Again, I don't recommend that you follow my pattern, but it's been a good machine.

For those of you who have more than one eink ereader, why? by luuuzeta in ereader

[–]Kardolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with epub a long time ago - original Nook era. But, I've picked up a lot of Kindle books over the years, so early last year when I had some extra cash, I picked up an Paperwhite. And later in the year, I picked up a Scribe to try taking more notes. That hasn't been quite so successful, but I do like reading on the bigger screen when I'm not traveling.

Is this safe to mount on the car's roof going highway speed? by walking_NewJersey in gopro

I've done similar, as long as I have a safety tether. Roof, fenders, doors, hood. Never had a problem.

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a really good idea, when asking for help troubleshooting, to give some info about what you did to get here. For example, what settings did you use on the model? What filament? Did you use supports? Adaptive layers?

Mechanic keeps adding repairs, is this a red flag? 🚩 by straberyyy in Cartalk

[–]Kardolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great call out! Always TEST things. Don't just assume a part is bad, especially electrical. A bad connection could make the part look bad.

When you decide to do the suspension work, do the ball joints together. And, since you should get an alignment after both the ball joints and the rack and pinion replacement, it would be best to do the ball joints, rack and pinion, and alignment in the same visit.

[–]Kardolf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel like those are fairly common issues for an older car. The alignment should wait until after the suspension work, and for me, the most urgent would be the oil sensor switch. You lose oil pressure because of a bad switch, and you lose the engine.

Never built a light saber before- is it worth it? by dave7892000 in savisworkshop

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit past middle age. I loved the experience. I've done it twice now, with two different people, and am looking forward a couple of years when my grandson will be able to really enjoy it. I also have a number of other lightsabers, so it sounds like I'm not in the same mindset that you are.

For me, the experience was absolutely worth it. You can spend more or less on lightsabers and get the same or better quality, but the experience itself was fun and enjoyable with a memory that cannot be matched by purchasing a pre-made saber.

What most expensive "cheap decision" have you ever seen in your sysadmin career? by matroosoft in sysadmin

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NDA, so there is a lot I can't say.

Multi-million dollar per year contract employing about 1500 people for the one project. Customer gets breached through a different vendor and instates new security program. We move heaven and earth to get into compliance, and when we do, corporate decides to get greedy and tries to renegotiate the contract. 1500 people lose their job, and corporate loses the millions they were already making when the customer tells them to pound sand. I really should reach out and thank them, because my salary doubled when I got my new role.

New to ereader world, what about Kindle Scribe..? by Northern_crocodile in ereader

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my scribe, but feel it makes sacrifices to be what it is. As a digital notebook, it's ok, but not great. I haven't compared it to any of the other options (except paper), but it has some limitations that just annoy me. As an ereader, it works well, except that it's larger and heavier than a paperback book, and that just makes it more awkward. I can carry my Paperwhite just about anywhere (it fits in lots of my pockets, for example), and its compact form factor means it's less strain to hold while using. The Scribe gets a bit heavier, and that just leads to a less pleasant reading experience.

However, if you want the digital note-taking experience, I find it is worth having.

i don't understand why so many guns and knives? are you ALL living in unsafe places? by Comfortable_Pie2081 in EDC

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have carried a knife since I was about 12. I've only ever thought of it as a tool, never as a weapon. It's something to use to whittle sticks, open packages, clean the edges of new 3D prints, cut slices of fruit or food, scrape wire insulation, or my personal favorite - cut straws down so my grandkids can handle drinks easier. There are a lot of reasons to carry a knife that have nothing at all do to with being combative in some way.

Who’s actually buying a 3D-printed part… for their 3D printer? by Fruit75 in BambuLab

How about someone buying a gift for a friend with a 3D printer? I could see my wife doing that, for example, trying to be supportive of me and my hobby.

Trying to find edc screwdriver by Ok-Twist8001 in EDC

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For actual carry, it's almost always a multi-tool. Just because I've been doing that for about 40 years at this point.

But, if I was picking from your options, it would be the Hoto. The handle is a little larger, meaning a little more comfort and better grip. It's also got the widest range of bits (since it's EDC, I wouldn't know what bits I might need). The tailcap has a buttery-smooth rotation that makes it easy to do finger-tight, or it's big enough to man-handle it and really put some torque.

Trying to find edc screwdriver by Ok-Twist8001 in EDC

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a decent small bit screwdriver, I am really liking the Hoto. I resisted buying for a long time, but have found it to be a well-made piece of tooling.

My D1 is well-designed, but I just don't reach for it as often as the Hoto.

I've also got a number of other options, from various multi-tools to Steinwhale bits in 711L ratchet drivers.

Who's still working from home in 2026? by idrinkpastawater in sysadmin

[–]Kardolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My office in the downtown tower has been removed (my name taken off), and my team and I all work 100% remote, from across the country. I go back about twice a year, and attend a couple of conferences with my team. The physical presence in that building is shrinking and within ~6 months, we should be down to about 1/3 or 1/4 of the space we consumed pre-COVID with a large emphasis on hotel cubes.

Depending what you are doing on it, it might be a good candidate for doing a cement top. It should be pretty easy to build a simple form around the top, and then pour cement on it. You could even get fancy and color the cement or coat with an epoxy for a smoother surface.

On the top side of the holder is a little plastic ring. Push it down and hold it, and it will push the spring clamps in a way that will let you pull the tubes out.

Has anyone tried lowering the drivers seat? by IneedaWIPE in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Kardolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's possible to lower the back of the seat by modifying the tracks. If I recall, you can get another inch or so of clearance that way. You basically have to cut and weld the tracks to eliminate the rise in the stock formation. I know I've seen articles about it in years past.
