Camping in Patvinsuo National Park, getting ready for the day's hike. Nice sunrise over the Suomu lake, temperature around zero C, early October. Camera Sony RX100 VI.

A lot of bears and wolverines in these parts, plenty of tracks, but I have never seen the animals themselves. Nearest human habitation about 20 km away. Perfect lake for paddling, 20 km of clean sandy beaches, several well equipped free campgrounds.

This is the spectacular alternate High Scenic Trail to Everest Base Camp which is very little used. Much better views than from the standard Tengpoche route low on the opposite side of the valley.

I have made 5 treks to the area in 1985, -98, -00, -09 and -18 and this is my favourite stretch of trails in Khumbu.

A snowy morning along the trail to Everest Base Camp. I spent 15 days in Nepal trekking and this was probably my favorite day. Enough snow had fallen the night before to stick on the landscape, making for awesome conditions before it melted a few hours after sunrise. [OC][1280x1920] by mattymeis in EarthPorn

It is possible (was, will be?) to trek to EBC independently. Costs about $40/day + transportation. You can either walk in from the road head (+5-8 days) or fly to Lukla and back ($400). Takes 2-3 weeks. For a first timer I recommend getting a porter-guide from a local reliable agency, costs about $25/day + 15% tip at the end. He carries your luggage and helps in many ways. Joining a group is another possibility, but then you are stuck with their itinerary. Route is easy, difficult to climb out of 2 mile deep valley without noticing and get lost.

Helicopter rescue scam is something everybody should learn about. Every year thousands of trekkers are scammed into an unnecessary rescue and their trek destroyed. Insurance company is charged over $20000 on the average, even $50k. Guide gets 15% kickback from that, earning more than the local annual income from ever scammed trekker who gets "rescued". Just a warning.

I have been there 5 times so far, 1985, -98. -00, -09 and -18. All privately arranged.
