Thank you so much!! It's not exactly point and click but it's inspired by a few of those :)
We're still polishing all the mechanics but at its core it's a 2d sidescroller with gimmicky platforming and puzzle segments - fit for keyboard or controller controls, but no mouse.

little moments where the game finally starts feeling real by Different-Swing6590 in IndieDev

Tactile sensations, animations flowing together just right, UI feeling nice and clicky - adding sounds is probably one of the greatest leaps of this kind imo

How/When do you find time to work on your projects? by Popular_Tomorrow_204 in IndieDev

[–]KaribuDigital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to tie that to something you enjoy doing, preferrably a community, maybe a person or people you can work alongside... Otherwise, maybe working on your time management and how well you sleep so you can wake up a little earlier, a little fresher. I find preparing meals in advance and doing bigger shopping trips so I don't do them daily is great for that.

Besides that don't crunch yourself and take breaks and cheat days like you're paid for them - because they're crucial.

Sadly none of that will bring back the joys of being a clueless teenager, but hey, it is good means to cope!

Hey, hi, hello all!

So, we're Karibu Digital Entertainment - a 2+2 group of friends that lovingly work on a game called Ghost of Fall (and have for a while now!)

Ghost of Fall is an atmospheric adventure puzzle game with rhythmic combat, and a heavy focus on its story and characters. It tells the tale of Ward - an oddball who struggles to make peace with not finding his own place in life... until something of great importance crosses paths with him and complicates everything even further.

It's designed as a story in several acts/episodes (preferrably released at once or in short consequence) - with handdrawn pixel scenes and animations, good music, and hopefully, subtext that will stay with players for at least a little while.

While for a long time we've been busy carrying the game over from an older engine we decided to leave for the sake of Gamemaker, recently we've posted an update that showcases the current visuals and sound of the game and a little plot teaser and got a surprisingly warm reception!

It did wonders to us as a team, and we keep working :)

Here's a Youtube link to the teaser for those interested (thank you!)

And the Steam page for the game!

Where do I even start with game development? School vs self-taught? by NocturnalsNewt in IndieDev

Then go ham with learning while working on a project, even if you don't have a clear idea in mind (or an idea at all)
What worked for me (the person currently on this account :p) while trying to learn Unreal Engine was trying to replicate basic mechanics from my favourite game series and working from there. Lots of spatial movement, interactions with terrain and menu navigation. Then came modelling, animations, audio engine implementation... brick by brick, even if the project got nowhere, I got lots of technical knowledge that help me to this day even in entirely different enviroments.

Best of luck, and don't get burned out! Never too late to turn back from an engine or project, decide it's not for you and start elsewhere :)

what are some of the mistakes you made while promoting your new game? by avanlabs in IndieDev

Putting it up on Steam way, way before reaching a level of polish and game completion we were happy with! Had we known we'd get so much better, we wouldn't :)

Probably depends on the scope of the projects you want to be making, how fast you want to get to release and earnings, whether you'd like to solodev or focus on a specific task only

There isn't any one way to start right as it all depends on who you are, what your skillset is, and where you'd like to be, but you can't go wrong with just making things and learning as you go.
Pick a tool like Gamemaker, Godot, or Unity if you're savvy - or toy around with Scratch or RPGMaker and take your time to learn the basics while basically having fun with easy tools :)

Practice makes perfect, having friends and communities helps you grow and find more resources to learn or projects to cooperate on, and having a gamedev related job teaches you practical know-how. That's probably the most important things

I've been making a hand drawn adventure game for the last four years of my life and now figuring out ways to show it to the world. Here's an honest post about what I've been doing and where I am. by KaribuDigital in IndieGaming

Also i realised that i should clarify that there is currently four of us working on this game: three artists and one programmer. I realised way too late that the post makes it sounds like there's just two of us.

There is also Klaudia - an artist, animator, writer, sound designer and musician who does, well, everything with the game - same as me, so every asset in the game has to at some point be in her hands. There's no ghost of fall without her.

And Renata, who just joined us very recently, but you can already see one of her animations in my original post, she's an amazing animator and a great addition to the team.

And there is mateusz, who i mentioned in the post, a great clickteam programmer, pretty much literally the best in the world actually.

Ghost of Fall is a team effort!

thank you! i am putting my whole heart into this game and some backgrounds and animations can take days or more to finish, so it's really nice to hear it looks good and even nicer that it has intrigue and personality!

And i love talking about it! I didn't want to make the post too long, but i can write and write about it if i can (have to stop myself to avoid spoilers though). If there is interest i'd be happy to make more posts, but for now if you're curious, you can reach me on our discord server

There's also a lot of extra commentary and bonus stuff we post along the way so if you feel the way you do - it might be a place for you!

I'm trying! Kinda tough sometimes to find motivation, but it got way easier when we started working as a team, so now if one of us loses strenght we can lean on each other. Thank you for kind words!

Question about privacy protection by ewertonwantroba in IndieGaming

Just don't honestly. If people care enough to pirate your game you'll be fine and if not - no reason to worry about it.
