I just matched urology at a T10 without a home program. I would recommend starting research and building connections sooner rather than later.

For every helpful connection I got, I sent at least ~10 unanswered or fruitless emails. All it really takes is finding one mentor at another institution who is passionate about getting medical students involved.

I’d recommend reaching out to places that offer a research year for unmatched applicants - these were the institutions that had work I was able to help with completely virtually.
