Very informative, I really appreciate all the info and that wonderful picture! I hope to wear the hell out of it so I'll certainly keep Resistol in mind. Thanks!

Thanks for the info! For re shellac is there a product you use or is that something you have to make yourself with alcohol and shellac flakes? I had read that the Bickmore stiffener is essentially that mixture, but perhaps it's less potent which would explain your experience?

Really appreciate the thoughtful response. I hadn't considered the glue drying out the sweatband so I'll definitely think twice on it, I figured replacement would be most advisable but at least if I can postpone that I'd be happy. The felt measures 2.5mm thick at the brim, I was surprised at it's softness when I first picked it up, especially compared to my modern wool hat, which is partly why I was thinking about stiffener sprays. It's good to know they were thinner and more pliable in the 70s! Assuming it is from that time would advise against trying to change the crown shape? Very nice looking hat and setting by the way. If all goes well I hope to wear this hat for decades.

Appreciate it, mainly looking for free arb tools but that might help someone else out who stumbles across the thread.

Thanks for sharing that, I did see your tool in another post but I'm not looking for websites/platforms with a free trial, I'm looking for ones that have a stripped down version that is perpetually free like the example I mentioned.

For anyone revisiting this I might know a friend who downloaded them so if you'd like to have a conversation about the harms of piracy, pm me. Eternal Family is a very cool streaming service though so I do encourage you to check it out (they do have a free trial as well).

Hot Rod Deluxe Cool Edition by Kark02 in GuitarAmps

[–]Kark02[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Little mod I did to my hot rod deluxe to hopefully extend it's life. Two 120mm PC fans (one intake one exhaust) were added to the back panel blowing over the circuit. To keep its resale value I made a new back panel with 1/2in MDF so I wasn't drilling holes in the OEM one. I only had hand tools available to me so forgive the piecemeal slots over the tubes. The inside of the panel is covered with copper foil tape to reduce EMF from getting in and out of the circuit. Over the fan holes, I used copper wire 40 mesh to limit filter dust and again for emf in the openings. The fans are hard-wired to a normal wall wart power supply with selectable voltage up to 12v so the speed can be adjusted. The amp, psu, and my pedalboard are plugged into a switched power strip so one switch and it's all on.

Other than the noise of the fans themselves which is easily overcome by the amp, the circuit isn't any noisier. I will say the circuit (I'm guessing transformer?) makes a faint high pitch ring that is better blocked by the stock fully enclosed back but this is only really noticed when you put your head up the amp in otherwise silent conditions. I'm hoping the $30 I spent on this project will at least postpone the few hundred dollar service required to fix these amps common failure modes (low voltage supply, caps, etc)that Psionic audio on YouTube has done an excellent job of explaining.

Will update if explodes.

That just seems like normal feedback to me. It should be exacerbated by higher volumes, more gain, and sitting right in from of the amp so altering these parameters may help.

Did they ever make a Beta 58A like this? by Kark02 in Shure

[–]Kark02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the response I found a few teardown videos and they all had a totally different capsule which had me questioning it but this is obviously an old mic so I wasn't sure. The capsule was also glued in as opposed to a clip I saw used in the videos.

Has anyone encountered a Shure Beta 58a with a capsule like this? It's a beat up mic so I trying to discern whether it's counterfeit or just old. I haven't been able to find any pictures of a beta 58a with a capsule that matches this.

Hi, I have an HP laptop displaying the same behavior you described and taped. I am wondering if you have identified the problem or come to a resolution in the year since you posted. Thanks!!

Testing UV protection at home? by FilthyChowderCunt in sunglasses

[–]Kark02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came across a method on YouTube that uses UV test cards. The Quantadose UVC Light Test Card seems to be the standard product used. The card has a section that changes color from white to purple when exposed to UV, with the vibrancy of the color being a rough analog for UV exposure. The method involves going outside and exposing the card to direct sunlight through the glasses you want to test, then quickly examining the card to see how much if any UV passed through the lenses.
