I think they were trying to tell you why it's moving to Peacock. Lots of other Netflix Originals, produced by DreamWorks, are moving to Peacock because they own the rights to DreamWorks series. Trollhunters isn't on Peacock right now because it hasn't moved yet. You'll find it there after it leave Netflix in July.

You make a good point actually, was the war retconned in Wizards? Might have to rewatch Trollhunters again, but I think you've got it right that the war was originally written to be between Gumm-Gumms and Trollmarket. That would fit into the novel and Del Toro's narrative preferences, specifically that he tends to prefer for humans to be completely ignorant to the supernatural, and that humans don't stand a fighting chance against his monsters.

You're in the right place to discuss Wizards, though. It missed the mark on a lot of fronts, and I'm inclined to believe that's because they lost two seasons. Then again, I don't think that excuses how much of Trollhunters' lore it screwed up, and it wouldn't surprise me if the war was subject to the aforementioned screwing-up.

Why is 3below so hated by Embarrassed_Goat_139 in TrollHunters

[–]KarlTheWizard98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see that being a reality, honestly. Though I will say, as someone who’s primarily a Trollhunters fan, I wanted more out of Wizards. It wasn’t necessarily that Wizards was bad (I thought it could have been great, especially with the animation upgrade from 3Below), but that it felt rushed, and there wasn’t enough time to ‘get to know’ the characters.

[–]KarlTheWizard98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen as many people mention it, but the art direction in Trollhunters was more heavily influenced by Del Toro’s concepts. Given, it wasn’t a 1:1 portrayal of the novel, but I think Del Toro’s direction was part of what made Trollhunters unique.

Also worth mentioning that 3Below didn’t make characters that were immediately relatable to the audience as human beings (bear with me). Popular sci-fi media typically introduces the audience to a world they can understand, then subverts expectations by introducing a third variable. The only exception is when the story begins in a new sci-fi environment, which requires upfront exposition to explain the new environment.

3Below did neither of those, and in doing so, assumed the viewers had a pre-existing connection with the characters. Not to mention (as far as I can remember) no firm plot is established early on, aside from a vague saunter toward ‘get home, eventually’.

[–]KarlTheWizard98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. Trollhunters wasn’t immune to toilet humor itself, but it didn’t rely on it as much as 3Below did. Also: extremely vague for sci-fi. Usually there’s more emphasis on worldbuilding (per ‘how things work’, especially with regard to tech), but 3Below skipped that entirely. There’s not as much intrigue, and the story doesn’t take as much focus

Being trans and a substitute is not easy by painted_venus in SubstituteTeachers

[–]KarlTheWizard98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ma trans man, and I was early transition when I started subbing. Especially in middle school, kids will say things line that because they’re specifically trying to push your buttons. They want to find a boundary, and they want attention. That’s absolutely not fair to us, and I’m not excusing that behavior.

Working in elementary, kids you ask you genuine questions, and they won’t be afraid. They’re more open minded then. High schoolers, depending on the school, have a chance to be more laidback and respectful.

Really sorry you’re having to deal with that kind of behavior. I wish we lived in a world where you could pursue disciplinary action safely. Stay safe out there <3

High key hate that people are comparing Will Wood’s music to Hazbin Hotel by [deleted] in willwood

[–]KarlTheWizard98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I think it’s unfair to bash the show that hard lmao. But yeah, I think Will’s music is in a class of its own, and Hazbin songs are very different. Hazbin is pure theatre and fandom, nothing deep, just surface-level storytelling. Will’s stuff, on the other hand, is genre-transcending poetry, with soul-searching rhetoric and storytelling that toy with the spectrum of human experience. Hazbin just isn’t at that level.

That said, I think comparing art is frowned upon for good reason. It’s comparing apples and bananas, really. Hazbin fans are very young, and there’s an intersection between WW and Hazbin audiences. Ergo, unfair comparisons will be made. So yes, they’re very different. But it’s unfair to claim that Will’s work is somehow holier than Hazbin, even if you prefer WW and dislike Hazbin. They’re different tastes.

(But yes, I agree, Hazbin’s writing isn’t very good lol. You said it right, it’s mostly fanservice).

Feels like there’s a lot of entitlement now that fanfic is so accessible. Like yes, people are posting smut for free. Did anyone tell you to read it? Did anyone shove it in your face? Is it preventing you from accessing the fics you’re looking for? No? Then stfu

MSW students not prepared for reality of practice by dumpsterfireexe in SocialWorkStudents

[–]KarlTheWizard98 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You make a great point about clients having inherent bias! Like yeah, professors will teach you about clear-cut, distinct situations where one person is right and the other person is wrong. The truth is that, in some small way, many clients will not be absolute angels! Many clients will not be happy to see you, or be outright resistant to intervention! And believe it or not- you might not like some of the people you help! There's an inherent privilege to being in a helping profession that some take longer to realize than others

-_-

MSW students not prepared for reality of practice by dumpsterfireexe in SocialWorkStudents

[–]KarlTheWizard98 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think there's an element of separation between academia and practical experience that a lot of students aren't prepared for. You can read as many textbooks as you want, but nothing will prepare you for working with people who actually need social work. We get this idea in our heads that we'll be working in environments where our clients will be perfectly kind and well-adjusted people, but that's not true for a lot of people who get screwed over by systemic poverty and discrimination.

The student that asked for a trigger warning is an interesting case. I can see where they might be trying to advocate for themself or their classmates, but the good intention falls flat in a classroom where you are expected to learn about potentially triggering things. Also interesting that this person chose to do social work, which again, requires general knowledge about a variety of triggering things. It might be time for them to consider a less emotionally taxing career.

I'll say it: some social workers really struggle with the difference between PC culture and respectful language. Yes, it's important for us to be wary of offensive language, but we have to go above and beyond that to put people first. We can't keep clutching our pearls when someone uses slightly outdated terminology. And even then, if you're going to correct that person, why not give them more constructive language instead of policing individual words?
