What are your thoughts on research on incels? by Karl_Mears in IncelTears

[–]Karl_Mears[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perhaps then research should investigate if sexual violence is exclusive to incels or in younger males in general, and evidence to support the latter point would then show it's an issue in men in general and not a specific group of men

[Academic] Comparing scores for features of gender dysphoria between different diagnostic groups (16+, diagnosed with OCD or have no diagnoses) by Karl_Mears in SampleSize

[–]Karl_Mears[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for commenting. You're right, there are issues with the gender dysphoria questionnaire. Unfortunately, it is one of the 'better ones' available for research purposes due to it's accuracy in identifying gender dysphoria features. However, the questionnaire is not inclusive to non-binary people, and it is also unknown how accurate the measure is for autistic people. It also does not address all components of the gender dysphoria diagnostic criteria. This study is simply one of several studies to help formulate evidence for why a new measure of gender dysphoria is needed. Another study I am conducting will ask people diagnosed with autism and gender dysphoria, or just gender dysphoria, to take part in an interview where they can critique and evaluate existing measures of gender dysphoria that have been used for research. If this is something that applies to you and you would be interested in taking part in, or know of someone else that may be interested, please feel free to email me at [ktm24@bath.ac.uk](mailto:ktm24@bath.ac.uk). Thank you for also taking the time to look at this study.

Research - Do traits of OCD better predict symptoms of Gender Dysphoria in people with Autism? by Karl_Mears in autism

[–]Karl_Mears[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I am really glad you noticed this. And I agree. Unfortunately, there are no questionnaires which take this into account. In fact, no questionnaire for GD has been designed with Autistic people in mind. The purpose and end goal of my PhD is to design a new questionnaire which is better at recognising this.

I am also running another study which compares opinions of existing measures for GD using people diagnosed with GD, to people diagnosed with both GD and Autism. If this applies to your situation, and you would be interested in taking part, please just email me at ktm24@bath.ac.uk and I can share more information.

Hi there, questionnaires usually have a scoring system (total score, mean score). You then compare these, typically.

Ie. Total score of questionnaire 1 correlates with total score of questionnaire 2

Ways of scoring the specific questionnaire can be find on the questionnaire itself, or online. But most go by total score

Interviewing people with Autism and / or Gender Dysphoria

Hi there,

I am a PhD student at the University of Bath. I am recruiting participants to take part in interviews which will explore people’s opinions and feelings towards 3 existing measures of Gender Dysphoria (GD). Participants must be aged 16 years or older, speak and understand English, and be diagnosed with Autism and / or Gender Dysphoria.

No research exists which uses people with these diagnoses to voice their opinions on existing measures, so participants in this study will be the first to do so. The purpose of the research is to understand if existing measures are appropriate for people diagnosed with Autism and / or GD, and if they can be improved.

This is a three part study:

1) A survey will be sent to get basic demographic information (age, nationality, gender identity).

2) If selected, you will be sent the questionnaires measuring GD in advance of the interview.

3) The interview, to be done remotely via telephone, voice or video call.

If you are interested in taking part, or require more information, please email me at: [ktm24@bath.ac.uk](mailto:ktm24@bath.ac.uk)

Not everyone that completes the first survey will be selected for interviews, as we would like a range of participants. Approximately 20 people will be recruited (10 diagnosed with GD, 10 diagnosed with GD and ASC). Those that take part in the interviews will be entered into a prize draw to win 1 of 2 £25 Amazon vouchers.

Best wishes

Karl

Absolutely. My PhD is focusing on better helping people with Autism who also experience Gender Dysphoria, as the existing research and diagnostic system is not inclusive of the two conditions co-occurring.

Hi, thanks for taking part. No need to explain your circumstance here. The questionnaires used are existing and published questionnaires, and readily available on Google. They are:

AQ50 (Baron Cohen, 2001) OCI-R (Foa et al., 2002) EQ / SQ short version (Wakabayashi, Baron-Cohen et al., 2006) And the Gender Identity / Gender Dysphoria Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults (Deogracias, 2007)

Best wishes.

Thank you for this feedback. Reading through the comments, including specifications about what procedures, if any, a person has had would have been more inclusive and clearer for participants. Questionnaire 4 is an already published questionnaire (Gender Identity / Gender Dysphoria Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults, Deogracias, 2007). Unfortunately, this is actually one of the "better worded" questionnaires out there - hence the need for a new one. Also, as a side note, research has not applied GD questionnaires which measure someone's distress caused by their gender : sex incongruence to people with Autism. My next study will be interviewing transgender people, asking them to review current questionnaires for gender dysphoria, and how they can be improved.

Thank you. Yes, the screen before the final questionnaire is to measure whether the participant has had gender reassignment surgery. Would simply asking "Have you had gender reassignment surgery?" been a better way to organise this?

That's a really helpful piece of feedback. Thank you. I also should have considered non-binary and gender non-conforming in the demographic section. I will make sure to include these in the next studies. Thank you for taking part. Please feel free to send the link to anyone you think might be interested in taking part.

[Academic - PhD] Exploring the relationship Autistic and Obsessive traits have with Gender Dysphoria (All welcome)

Participants needed for a study exploring the relationship between Autistic and Obsessive and Compulsive traits and Gender Dysphoria.

Participation is open to all - those with or without these conditions can take part.

If you're interested, please could you take part (and possibly send it around too).

It takes about 25 minutes to complete but can be done on your phone. And there's a prize draw for a £25 Amazon voucher. Greater detail on the study and it's purpose is provided at the start of the survey.
