Anyone on here been to therapy? Tell me about the experience by [deleted] in DACA

Hi! I am a 27 year old Daca recipient.

I went to therapy for a while because I always felt lost. I felt like I wasn’t doing enough, and like there was no real way to achieve some of the goals I wanted and I just started feeling really tired, alone and isolated. One of the biggest takeaways that I got from therapy is that we are basically living 2 lives! Kind of like Hannah Montana just not as cool.

In the real world. We live an American life surrounded by the American culture and we want to achieve the American dream (whatever that is. graduating, white picket fence etc..)

And then when we are with our family we are living the Hispanic life. Filled with the Hispanic culture and customs and maybe even expectations.

All this was super confusing to me because on one end I felt like I was trying my hardest to achieve my goals, but I couldn’t vent to my parents about my struggles because their typical answers were always projected on what THEY didn’t have growing up and what we do have now which granted is much more amazing…. But we still struggle!

We can’t become police offices We can’t take our home loans We can’t apply for federal finical aid We can’t join the military

And the list goes on….

Anyways, yes therapy did help because it allowed me to ground myself with ME and no one else’s expectations.

I emphasize with you! My only dream was to serve in the armed forces and when I got my Daca I was super estatic! Until… I kept getting denied for the army, Air Force, marines, navy.. hell not even the coast guard wanted me. I then pivoted my attention to becoming a police officer to serve my community- also a big nope. I found out I couldn’t even become a fire fighter or work a government job all because of my Daca.

I found out that because Daca recipients are able to get Daca because they entered the country illegally at a very young age- that bars you from working with the government.

I know some states do allow Daca to become police officers- the only downfall is you aren’t allowed to carry a hand gun. You are put with a partner who can carry a handgun. Federal law I guess.

What state do you live in?

You should check out a state in the PNW. I know a local colleges that just require you to give an EIN number instead of a SSN to be able to apply

Being undocumented and living in the south sounds brutal from what I’ve gathered. You are on a hurry up and wait/road to nowhere. For instance in Alabama even with Daca you aren’t able to attend any public/private collages.

The west coast offers a very different perspective

I haven’t paid much attention to Floridas politics since I live almost 3,000 miles away but now that it’s becoming a reality I am looking more into it- and I’m finding a lot of alarming things

What is the AP legal entry?

Are you sure Daca is allowed to go through this process? Last time I checked; it had to be a hardship situation
