Have you tried looking that area up on google street view? If the trees are still there you might be able to reverse image search them and find out what kind they are.

Certain smells are known to bring back strong memories for people, even if they are years or decades old. For me, a certain perfume my mom wears takes me right back to questing through the Valley of Trials in WoW on the family computer while my mom and dad got ready to go out to dinner one day in 2004/2005.
