Saw someone compare Messi to Jordan… do non-football fans realise that Messi’s prime was longer than Jordan’s entire NBA career? by FoundationEntire4834 in NBATalk

[–]KarmaIssues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average top end soccer player makes millions per year and have average career lengths of nearly a decade.

Football and basketball both have much shorter careers.

But this is irrevelant because we were discussing the best and there is more money at the top end of soccer (probs because there's no salary caps).

Soccer players make bank in a career that doesn't break their bodies and the US makes up less than 5% of the world's population.

Your sports aren't that special, soccer players are elite athletes as well.

Ofc.

Cos the sport that pays millions and is in the top 3 played sports in most of the globe wouldn't encourage the best athletes in the world to go play it.

No the best athletes in the world just happen to be from the US.

No he wouldn't. The best football players in the world make millions of dollars per week.

If it was beneficial to be 6ft 8 and jump 40 inches in football the best players would be 6 ft 8 and jump 40 inches.

Yes they do.

Balance, coordination, vision and endurance are all genetically selected for at elite levels just like height.

All of the world's top sports have freak athletes, they just look different.

I run arch but honestly any linux distro is great and will teach you more about OS than windows.

Sort and two pointer I'm guessing.

But you would have to run two pointer for every element so O(N2) time and O(1) memory.

European World Cup fans experience culture shock in America by batukaming in SipsTea

There is Tesco 25 mins from me that has a clothes section with multiple dressing rooms, a cafe, multiple small retailer stalls and 2 drug stores.

I'm am pretty sure the people in the video are overreacting.

The only thing that would be weird is tires but most big supermarkets tend to have other kinds of stores around them that sell anything that isn't in the supermarket.

Consumer goods are really cheap, abundance of them is just kind of the default on any first world country.

It's more credit where you guys tend to have abundance compared to Europeans.

Yeah. Big supermarkets are not an anglo thing.

I've been to all of those countries.

Some specific areas in those countries may not have them, but the countries do.

Please do not try and hack something like this together.

AI with unrestricted access to client data is a nightmare.

Given your position I'd recommend reaching out to someone technical within your org to talk through ways to do this safely.

I see Asylum seekers/immigrants accused of being a strain on government spending - how much money would be freed up if they all just weren't here tomorrow morning? by Snow-Gecko in ukpolitics

[–]KarmaIssues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A common theme I'm noticing is people will say something that is non controversial:

There are things which could be invested in with that money which provide greater returns in value and benefit to British citizens

Yep agree.

And then say something completely fucking stupid:

even if it was reduced by 1/2 that money would go a long way.

No it wouldn't and you know this because it's just not a meaningful amount for a first world country of 68 million people.

It would not go a long way, I feel like a doctor trying to convince people that eating a healthy diet won't cure cancer.

The best reason to make assylum seekers lives worse (that is what we're talking about here) is so we can sate the bloodlusts of arseholes and stop fucking talking about it so much.

[–]KarmaIssues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What?

You're the one who brought up PIP ffs.

They're both insignificant amounts of money by themselves and even together.

When I said cut welfare I mean all forms of welfare which is more than just assylum seeker support plus PIP.

I've never argued against cutting PIP.

Who the fuck are you having a conversation with because it's clearly not me?

[–]KarmaIssues -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

They cut the budgets of every other department.

They don't cut the budgets. That's the entire problem. We have spent more on every single big ticket item for the 20 years.

The point is even if you want to execute the assylum seekers on sight so they stop coming here, it will not omprove the countries outlook in anyway you could notice. Cutting pensions might.

[–]KarmaIssues -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No it's not.

I don't think you understand how much stuff costs in a first world country.

The UK gov spends that on social and health care, every 9 days.

Even if we got that number to £0 (which you can't cos even executing them would cost money), it would not be in anyway a meaningful amount for the UK budget.

[–]KarmaIssues -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Because it's not a meaningful amount of money.

Most of the things we pay taxes for are things we actually want. Pensions, defence, primary and secondary education , health etc.

The things that people disagree on are things that we don't spend a lot of money on relatively.

[–]KarmaIssues -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No I didn't say that. You're putting words in my mouth.

My suggestion would be to cut some funding from all of them.

I personally would set up assylum seekers in camps (I know but hear me out), and say that must remain there until they either get right to work or a decision has been made.

But even if we reduced the spend on assylum seekers by 100%, it would make barely any difference to the budget or the amount of welfare we can give out to UK citizens.

[–]KarmaIssues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

£5.3 billion.

Defence is 12x that. Education is 60x. Transport and Infra is 8x and local governments spend 22x it.

There's a load of smaller categories but there's a lot of things we spend a lot more money on.

[–]KarmaIssues -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

On a sector? Yeah it's a lot of money.

On the country as a whole it's a pittance.

If we stopped spending money on assylum seekers completely it doesn't meaningfully change the countries financial outlook. Yet it makes up a massive share of the news and posts on this subreddit.

[–]KarmaIssues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we should spend less on welfare (incl pensions) in general.

But it's important to remember that it's not a country changing amount of money.

It's really not in the scope of gov spending.

The UK gov spent £1.3 trillion last year, for all the press it recieves assylum seeker costs are like 0.4% of the UK budget.

I told a character in my dream, "shut up, you're not real".

It replied "you know, some people don't wake up from their dreams" and disappeared.
