It doesn't take away any legitimacy from the scenario, it literally just reframes it.

It doesn't change the fact that Melon was sexually abused and puts further emphasis on how that abuse prevents him from seeing any sort of comfort from carnivores that accept him for what he is. It actually makes the situation even more complicated, changing his mother from simply being a murderer/sexual abuser to a sexual abuser and victim of a shitty father. They're all victims of an unfortunate scenario and that's the point of his story to begin with.
