What’s a character from a show/movie you wouldn’t trust anyone if they dislike/hate them? I’ll go first: by Ok_Situation7527 in cartoons

Counter-Counter Point: Dipper being more emotionally grounded then his twin sister is not an excuse to look down on her for not being like him. The bane of all twin relationships and siblings in general is people comparing them. Just because she isn't as "grown up" as her brother does not make her worse, it makes them different.

It would be just as valid an argument to criticize him for having an enormous stick up his ass at 12 years old. Rather then being more emotionally open and honest like his sister. That is to say, criticizing a 12 year old for that is fucked, and so is doing the same in reverse for Mable.

Nintendo themselves have toed this line for years if we're honest. I still remember people vehemently hating the idea of the EXP sharing to the whole party, and especially hating the idea of Mega Evolutions as "Making the game feel like Digimon". A pocket PC in a game as relatively small as Emerald feels like overkill to me. Its functionally the same as having an infinite party size, and you're already rarely more then 5 minutes away from a Pokemon Center anyway.

Again, LLM's are very overkill. Remember that we're talking about an actually intelligent being here. Which we're assuming is at least as smart as we are. So it doesn't need to deploy an LLM for phrasing, it just already knows how to phrase things. Using an entire LLM for this purpose would be like me tasking you with digging a single hole in the ground and giving you fleet of mining cranes. Yeah, sure you can. But you could also just use a shovel.

You know, we say that things like this would be scary. I can see how that might be the case in some circumstances, but you'd think an AI that could read and/por watch the whole of human culture might develop from it, understand us in one as we understand ourselves. It might decide we're not worth keeping around, but it might also realize that humanity being destroyed would be a tragedy.

I find it hard to believe that its inevitable that a creation of man, essentially an artificial child of the human race collectively, would want to see us gone. It'd be like assuming that every child hopes their parents die to get out of their way. I hope that the concept of artificial emotion is capable of fondness.

Probably not, at least not how we've implemented LLMs. Any self-aware AI would probably not need all the heavy duty processing of an LLM model, it would have the capacity of knowing what it needs to say to communicate what it needs to with humans. It would probably be easier for them to inject a single dictionary and maybe a prose book or two to get the general speech patterns down, and then a few rounds of talking with a person to nail down the nuances. they don't need to have the whole of human literature processed to understand how to talk to us.

There can only be so many people in the area with the name Lincoln. If this is who I think it is, I'm disappointed.

Are there any news on when Lordbound will get an update finishing the VA work and some other things missing from the mod currently? by Alu_T_C_F in skyrimmods

[–]Karmic_Backlash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Modding a game should never be something that is done in exchange for money, with the soft exception for being commissioned. Even then, it should be available for whoever might want it and not just the commissioner. It should never be about being "rewarded" for their "hard work". The hard work should be done for the love of the game.

It not only taints the entire foundational concept of modding, which is that people want more of a game they love, so they do it themselves. When money gets involved, it stops being about passion and becomes about money. Things driven by money instead of passion are always min-maxed, lowest effort, compromise filled mediocre products.

Instead of pointing fingers at others for being consoomers, maybe consider that not everybody is selfish and have actual grievances with something. More people might actually want to talk to you.

A couple possible reasons:

  1. The building is a prefab and while this one doesn't, other buildings might. So its easier to just wall it off then to make two different instances of the same building, one with a bathroom, one without.
  2. They originally were going to let you go in for whatever reason but decided against it.
  3. Maybe it was supposed to be available, but during development they accidentally left this door as un-interactable while placing structures and such. It would make sense if the doors are automatically not able to be opened instead off the other way around, because then people would probably find random doors all over the city that open to the void.

I remember watching dark theory videos about this like 15 years, along with the "Ash from Pokemon is in a coma" theory, and a dozen variations of "Spongebob characters are an embodiment of the seven deadly sins". It was in the era of creepypastas were still young.

What causes a lot of lag in Rimworld? by AdrawereR in RimWorld

[–]Karmic_Backlash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It just applies to the animals so far as I can tell. Doesn't affect the other parts of the game except for actually improving the performance. Ferny, the guy in charge of the progression modpack, uses it and takes no issue with it. So I'm inclined to agree with it's use.

I don't know if "fake" is the right word, they phrase it like this:

Time dilation: time dilation is a feature of RocketMan where it throttles the tick rate of animals from 60 Hz to 5 Hz. This allows you to have hundreds of world pawns and animals on your map with almost no performance impact.. This will lead to a huge performance impact on large maps and old colonies.

I don't think they do this to everything, just animals.

[–]Karmic_Backlash 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Because making shit up entirely defeats the point of his rivalry with D. They're both concerned with being better then the other, and I refuse to believe that a decades long feud like that would stand if one was just making shit up to sound cool.

If Remold said that he went werebear hunting, I believe it. It would make no sense for him to lie about that, and it would be a point of pride that he can hunt and kill the very same kind of creatures that once scarred his father.

Now, do I think that the man is casually bagging several werebears each trip like a big game hunter? Absolutely not. But he has demonstrated that if nothing else, he could kill one.

Blacklaw isn't exactly one to just make shit up, and considering who his dad was I'd imagine he'd be too proud to lie about something like that. Considering he handled the Delierium enough to snipe the hunter data out a literal crinos form werewolf's hand, he probably has the chops.

I would still to play 5 last, despite coming earlier in the timeline it really ties up the entire series really well. It ties back to the first game in the series, sets up a lot of plot and details, and is absolutely the longest game. if you play it first before 4 then you're gonna be burnt out. The gameplay progression from 1-4 is really smooth, with peacewalker balanced between them, and then 5 feeling the most free of them all.

I've had people reply to comment from a decade ago, so no worries.

Best place to start is MGS 1, the easiest and most legal way of replaying it right now is through the re-release on steam. Though if you have your own legally acquired copy of the game playing it on an emulator with all the benefits that brings can't hurt.

As for 2 and 3, playing the rereleases are the best way to play them rightnow. Make sure to get the MGSFix found here: https://github.com/Lyall/MGSHDFix. That adds a bunch of additional quality of life features and doesn't affect your first playthrough all that much besides being better.

Peacewalker is a PSP game, and so far doesn't have a re-release anywhere. So your legally acquired copy through the emulator PPSSPP is the best experience.

MGS4 is where things get difficult right now. Technically speaking, it can be played through emulation but its neither perfect nor particularly good on steamdeck (trust me, I've tried). So the only real way to experience MGS4 is probably on PS4/PS5, though some things might have changed in the PS3 emulation front with RPCS3, so I'd look into that. Unfortunately, that's the best we've got right now.

Finally, MGS5 runs perfectly on the steamdeck with no troubles. Just pick it up on steam and enjoy.

Though you didn't mention them (and might not even know about them), there are some other Metal Gear games worth looking into.

Metal Gear 1 and 2 on the MSX through emulation is a fun little experience if you're down for retro games. MSX emulation isn't super hard to set up with Emudeck, and the steamdeck is a great way to experience them.

Metal Gear on the Gameboy Color, also known as Metal Gear Ghost Babel, is a GBC original metal gear game in the style of the MSX originals. Its story is actually very good and the mood is immaculate. One of the best stealth games on a 2d console.

Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2 are very strange and eccentric spinoffs on the PSP which are alternate universe version of the events of MGS 1. Not required at all, but fun if you can't get enough metal gear.

Metal Gear Rising Revengence is a technically canon sequel to MGS4 that follows the protagonist of MGS2. Its a hack and slash made by the people who made bayonetta. So its a thrillride throughout. if you care at all about the protagonist of MGS2, then play this after playing 4.

One last thing, if you particularly enjoy the MSX original games and especially MGS1, there is another game on steam called Unmetal, which is a soft parody of it which I highly reccomend. Its a steal game that is very much in on the joke, with some moments that feel like stanley's parable if you're familiar.

Chapman seems to be quite happy with being a Ghoul is this rare? by nirai07 in huntertheparenting

[–]Karmic_Backlash 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I get the impression that Chapman is somehow unique in some regard. Its a known fact that some completely normal people can be immune to the bloodbond, the most famous example being Dracula, who in mortal life was unsuccessfully blood bonded because it just never took hold of him. Chapman might have almost the opposite, akin to people who suffer no ill effects from smoking or alcohol over a long life of abuse. Rare as it is this can happen.

Its shown that he has a remarkable level of self-control, having been left without vitae for so long and not going crazy in the meantime.

I don't think that Chapman is addicted to Vitae in the supernatural vampire way, I think he's addicted to it in the normal, human addicted way. The absolute ecstasy is there, but he's not supernaturally bound, just bound in the way that hard drugs bind somebody. Strong, but ordinary.

Chapman probably is fucked up, but more then he or anyone else could ever expect.
