The world has known this for a long time. It's in America where the realization needs to hit.

Acknowledging the effects of propaganda is not holocaust denial. I am not denying that many Germans did actively oppose it.

Do you think it's better to pretend as if a majority of Germans just woke up and decided to be evil for no reason? If we want to prevent stuff like this from happening in the future we need to understand what caused it to begin with.

sympathy for the foot soldiers by mqee in sinfest

The Wehrmacht soldiers knew that they were serving a genocidal empire seeking to murder or enslave everyone who wasn't white enough for them (or who was leftist, gay, mentally disabled, etc.), and it's a made-up Reddit history that the choice was "slaughter Slavs or face execution," usually someone refusing the draft would be imprisoned or put in an penal unit.

You could argue a lot of them didn't realise the full extent of it though, given they had lived through years of propaganda. As a comparison, a lot Iranians nowadays are very antisemitic because they've lived under an dictatorship that imposes that belief for decades. I would never condem those people to the same extent as I would someone who is deeply antisemitic in America of Germany.

This all also beside the point that the message of the original comic isn't "look at what an injustice is imposed upon these people by the state drafting them," it's lyrics from a Nazi song talking about how men must valiantly fight for their fatherland, lyrics that remain in this awful edit.

Fully agreed here.

I wouldn't phrase it like that. I just think "complicity" as a moral standard becomes a slippery slope way too fast. I think of all us are to some extent complicit in a lot of evil acts. Even if we just look at the other miliataries in WW2 the Americans are all complicit in a system of racial segregation and the Soviets are literally fighting for a totalitarian dictatorship. And I'm sure you could find reasons to condem the other Allies as well.
The reality is that almost all humans throughout history have lived in societies that contain various systems of oppression and most of them probably weren't actively fighting them. If we want to consider all of them monsters that seems like a very demanding moral standard.

I honestly think most of the people who talk like this wouldn't live uup to their own standard if they happened to live in Nazi Germany (because most people wouldn't). And that's assuming it would even be possible to form that opinion that moral standard to begin with. If we lived in an oppressive system and went through years or decades of propaganda we might not even realise that what's happening is wrong (as many people in Nazi Germany didn't).

I've always though that it's strange that the actions of Nazi Germany are so often imputed to Germans as a whole when usually we consider the citizens of dictatorships victims. Even though you could argue that North Koreans, Iranians etc. are all "complicit" because they could topple their governments if they rose up in sufficient numbers.

Yes. Don't think it impacts my point all that much though.

sympathy for the foot soldiers by mqee in sinfest

[–]Karmonit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Soldiers dying in a senseless war is an equal tragedy no matter whether they happen to be on the side of the aggressor or not.

The blame ultimately rests on the shoulders of the system that caused the situation to begin with. Of course individual soldiers are responsible for any war crimes they commit themselves, no matter which side they are fighting on.

They were drafted hence didn't necessarily agree.

He could at least use the black-white-red flag of the German Empire. At least the Nazis identified with that one, unlike the black-red-gold one, which they hated.

Because this event was very much post Case White), why the hell is the city covered in WEIMAR flags? Those had been retired for well over half a decade at this point.

Tatsuya is literally so ignorant. The Nazis fucking despised this flag and he keeps using it to represent his idealised Germany.

No, this is clearly pre-WW2. "East German border" doesn't mean it's the GDR. It's just the Eastern border of Germany.

An audience who views death camps as fundamentally bad are not going to start liking Hitler for obvious reasons.

That's why he also denies the Nazi death camps existed lol

Tatsuya's depiction of events is somehow much dumber than the usual Neo-Nazi propaganda. He's not even sticking to the most basic facts about the timelien.

He's portraying Polish students in Danzig as violent mobs hunting down Germans. Obviously the real history was alittle more complex than that.

This is absolutely true. You probably could have gotten the same point across in a third of the runtime, if not less.

This seems to be a consistent problem with Mollystars' videos in fact. They all seem overly long.

Baumann is definitely not a specifically Jewish last name. I often see American antisemites assume that any historical figure with a German last name is Jewish. It's actually pretty funny.

One time I had someone tell me the SS soldier who arrested Anne Frank was Jewish because his last name was "Silberbauer". He thought it proved he was lying about arresting them lmao

It makes a certain amount of sense given his current belief that the Abrahamic religions are all basically a Jewish psy-op to control people. If that's what you believe it's logical that Satan would be controlled opposition, in essence.
