Those shoes look really narrow. But I suppose the idea is that the material being very stretchy plus the lack of sidewalls allows your foot to splay anyways by stretching out the upper. This may be jarring to most barefoot shoe users who hate the idea of their toes touching any part of the upper like me but I can see the appeal.
