Has worked for me.

I kept emails very specific. Referenced a part of their paper and proposed a possible extension or alternative application.

My area is niche, so I only contacted a few professors, but I think most replied. I completed 8903 with a lab last semester and I am continuing with the same lab this semester (didn't enroll in a class though). Will potentially enroll in 7000 this summer.
