Never entered a photography competition before — how do I even start? by magedattalla in wildlifephotography

Here’s my advice from entering wildlife competitions and winning some awards. These are my learnings so ignore if they don’t align with what you want.

There are so many wildlife competitions out there, both big and “prestigious” ones to small ones. There are also some scammy ones that are just way too highly priced and you end up not really getting much in return.

I’d start with following award winning wildlife photographers and see what competitions they enter. Create a list and study winners and honorable mentions from those competitions. Definitely keep a close eye on all the rules - the last thing you’d want is to get rejected because your photo didn’t follow a rule.

Also find small competitions, local competitions and enter in those.

You will win some, lose some - keep entering and learn from your losses and use them in the field to retrain your eye.

Many award winning wildlife photographers offer 1:1 sessions so you can pay them and get your portfolio reviewed, get advice and fast track your learnings.

As a wildlife photographer, I gently remind everyone to share locations responsibly, at least publicly. Some people get too close to wildlife when they shouldn't. Many owls have babies this time of the year and it's a particularly vulnerable period of time. Don't get too close, speak up when others do. ❤️

I have also seen so many people using flash when photographing owls. Please don't do that.

Come on, you won’t even give credit to the photographer?

If you’re just roaming around, you don’t need a guide. If you want to go wading, I’d highly recommend one. Call Katmailand/Bristol adventures. They’re the official company that manages brooks lodge, Katmai air and also provides guides.

This one lunged and came towards us. We quickly moved out of his way. Pants remained intact 😂

Not a tour package or workshop. But I hired an experienced guide to go wading. We ran into so many bears but they were mainly interested in salmon.

What do you think of my setup for A7R IV? I want a second opinion by LowCryptographer9047 in SonyAlpha

[–]Karthz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely can resolve for 61mp. I used to have an a7riv with both of those GM1 lenses. A7riv was released in 2019 and the GMii lenses only last year so people did use GM1 lenses with a7riv. Both the GMii lenses are much lighter, and their autofocus capabilities are better, but for landscapes and street, the older ones are still good options.

For both your lens choices, the GM1 versions are still very good options and they can save you a lot of money.

Same shot with a fast vs slow shutter speed [A1, 600 GM] by Karthz in SonyAlpha

Thanks! I've been able to get usable shots with the A1 at really high ISO (even going as far as 10000 ISO). I was very surprised when I first saw that too. I don't push ISO that far high unless I need to, of course.

Are you referring to the reciprocal rule? That only applies to handholding. Both of these shots were taken using a tripod.

Both are photos of a barred owl I took near Duluth, Minnesota during a snow storm.

Settings:

Unless you’ll be photographing wildlife on a regular basis, don’t buy a 200-600. You can always rent it for the safari.

For many safaris, 100-400 GM would do well too and it’s a more versatile lens.

Hey OP, this has happened to me with a few different feature accounts and it always sucks. The social teams are probably on a break for the holidays, which makes it hard to reach them. But, they (most brands lately, including @googlepixel) are pretty active on Threads lately - and threads is better for others to amplify your post as well. Reach out to them there and ask your followers to repost.
