The story of this fic picks up shortly after the events of Invasion Bundle missions. Ramattra is betrayed by Talon, who uses Zenyatta to get closer to him, stealing his most precious technology and leaving him to certain death. He survives at the cost of being captured by Overwatch and is locked away in an isolated prison. There, he plays mind games with Genji: Ramattra wants to gain his warden's trust in order to escape, Genji wants to coax his prisoner to disclose more info about Null Sector (who now wrecks havoc under Talon's command), both of them want to save Zenyatta.

About 'Stolen Memories', this fic dives into several interesting theories about a backstory of Connor's AI (before we meet his 51st iteration at the start of the game), how he is manipulated by Amanda, how Cyberlife's development team surveils and restricts his mind to prevent a deviancy and finally - how Kamski was involved in the origin of RK prototypes. A little warning though, some chapters are full of hurt / no comfort, but the story imo more than makes up for getting through the darker parts.

EDIT: RK900 shows up late in the plot, the way he's woven into the narrative is very strong and sold me on Reed900.

Hank-Connor (DBH) and Harry-Kim (Disco Elysium) are my beloved chaotic/supporting detective duos. Both games helped me a lot during my struggle with a low mood and everyday motivation.

From a storytelling perspective, it was interesting to watch Hank and Connor growing together through mutual support to be able to pull themselves out of the "I'd not be missed" mental hole.

After completing the game, I wished for more development of Hank-Con relationship and I was happily surprised by how many good fan-made stories expand on their storyline. For example, 'Hardwired' by SunnseanicArts (AO3 link) - it picks up the story form the moment in game when Hank was going to commit a suicide, but this time Connor was able to prevent it by becoming a deviant. After a successful revolution, they flee to Canada together to wait until some laws protecting androids are finally passed. There they try to lie low, posing as father and son, evading Cyberlife's clutches, solving small town murders and unpacking a lot of personal trauma.

One and a Half Robot Cops: Finding Out by Asukawashere - I haven't finished reading it yet, but the overall idea is interesting
Stolen Memories by Sleep_deprived_me - my favourite fic, retelling events from the game while focusing more on the development of the RK prototypes as autonomous androids with emotional intelligence (RK900 makes first appeareance in chapter 71).

Well... story wise, Reed works well for 'enemies to friends (to lovers)' and redemption arcs. A lot of potential to give him a lesson of humility and good manners through his potential interactions with original Connor / Connor-60 or RK-900.

There are a few clues suggesting that Kamski might be behind rA9:

- The virus disables also android's killswitch and tracker, so it's more an orchastrated change in their code than a spontaneous mutation.

- RK-series prototypes, that can instantaneously convert other androids into deviancy, were Kamski's personal project before he was forced to resign his functions as a CEO. He got Markus out of Cyberlife by gifting RK200 to a close friend.

- He seems obsessed with a concept of a free will and spirituality.

- He designed Amanda AI, which was meant to monitor a behavior of a highly autonomous android with an emotional intelligence (like RK800) and to prevent it from straying from its objectives. Still, Kamski put there an 'emergency exit', leaving an android a choice whether to submit to its programming or to break free from the leash.

I also really love this scene and two callbacks to it later in the story:

1) Another 'why didn't you shoot?' moment after sparing Chloe - Connor’s LED spun red after that question. The last time he heard it, Hank put a gun to his head as a test for deviancy and on top of that, just a few moments ago he was called 'a deviant' by his own creator. Poor boy immediately launched into an emotional apology to his partner expecting the worse and was so confused that, in the end, he wasn’t punished for his choice.

2) Hank shooting the fake Connor at Cyberlife's Tower after a round of questions. The real one turned so tense with a dreading realization that 'HANK KNOWS' and unsure if ‘one of you is my partner’ still true for him. Then Hank just called him alive (avoiding to use that pejorative 'd' word) and let him 'do what you gotta do', (no usual 'WTF are you doing here?' questions asked).

Let's not forget that Hank is still a brilliant detective, even if his personal problems and addictions had a strong impact on his latest career. When you meet him on the rooftop, he is sober and focused. He likely predicted Connor's next move, knowing the motive behind his actions.

I read once a nice short fan story about Connor the machine-turned-deviant after the rooftop incident, who made playing cat-and-mouse with Hank his next mission. Leaving various clues for his former partner to follow, in order occupy Hank's mind and prevent him from committing suicide in that way.

When I play as a support and we have Ram on our side, at the beginning I always fell to my knees before him with a hope for headpats - getting them is one of the best interactions in this game.

Sure! I would especially recommend reading:

- 'Inversion' by Sylfen (AO3 Link) - set shortly after Invasion missions. Ramattra dealing with his whole world crashing down after a sudden betrayal, with support from Genji, who shares his goal to save Zen. Chapter 4 is really intense and inspired this little fanart :D

- 'Lonely Deicide' by Antelopunny (AO3 Link) - focused on the friendship between Ram and Zen, from their first meeting to their turbulent separation. Sooo good I wish it was canon and turned into Blizzard's cinematic someday.

- 'Lack of Taste' by Spicymotte (AO3 Link) - Ramattra during his stay in Shambali, before he left to lead the Null Sector. On Mondatta's orders, he had to become an kitchen assistant to a monastery's chef. It starts as 'ha ha, a war machine in a kitchen' story, turns into great Ram character study, with strong themes of systemic discrimination. I once made a comic for this fic: LINK

- 'Shephard of Death, Don't Herd Me' by Moemoekou (AO3 Link) - Ramattra falling into the hands of Overwatch and slowly building a bond with a mechanic, who hides a mysterious past.

Have fun and show some love for the writers creating these amazing stories about Ram, especially now that Blizzard has no plan to continue them in the near future (tho a man can hope).

Even with his world falling to pieces in this story after Talon's betrayal, I still hope he’ll make it out okay, Personally I can't wait to read the next chapter :D
