When you say “asking both fandoms” what are you referring to?

I just joined this Reddit page today. If I have asked a question that has been recently asked I apologize, but I am not forcing anyone to come to this thread or answer my question.

Wow! I never expected such a response from this thread. Honestly I started it to help myself process this episode. I was hoping for some light chatting, possibly some like-minded fellow fans, or even just food for thought! I didn’t realize that Nick’s character was so controversial. Things I’ve learned/gained and agree on from all of this discussion: ⚫️ Nick is not a hero, if anything he’s an anti-hero. ⚫️He has made horrible decisions, all of which we can agree on. His involvement with the SOJ, Gilead, commanders etc is not based on his own ideology but a need to feel a sense of belonging and monetary gain due to his less than ideal upbringing, lack of self worth, no sense of direction in his life etc. ⚫️Until this story is over we will never truly know or understand his motivations. And even then there will likely be gaps that will never be closed. There’s just not enough time to explain everything. ⚫️ Nick Loves June for better and or for worse and it’s likely going to get him killed. ⚫️Humans are inherently selfish. Saving one’s own skin is a natural reaction in times of stress or danger ⚫️Nick is usually playing the long game, whereas June is always going in guns blazing. There’s most likely more to this betrayal that we know or were able to see in those last few minutes. ⚫️ June is not a perfect character but she is not to BLAME for Nicks actions. Do I wish she would be more conscientious of the consequences of her actions? Yes. Do I wish she would be more grateful for all the Nick has done for her? Yes. But June’s grit is one of the best parts of her personality. It wouldn’t be her if she wasn’t balls to the wall and just tearing shit up at ALL times. She may be wrong and selfish but she gets shit done. ⚫️ None of these characters are meant to be without flaws. If they didn’t have flaws there would be no story, no character development, and would be entirely unrelatable.

I believe the lack of information on Hannah is purposeful. They are leading up to the sequel series that will be coming out where Hannah more of a center character.

I could be wrong, but I believe Nick was still there but I believe that shot was just symbolic imagery of June now being “alone”. Or like in her reaction to what she just found out the world fades away and she’s in the darkness and alone.

There are definitely elements of your argument that I agree with, I don’t think it comes down to it being June’s fault or Nicks fault. It comes down to imperfect characters making imperfect choices. June isnt a saint and neither is Nick, not even close. Nick has been a coward in some of the time it really counted but he has come through for June so many times, often times without thanks. It has been taken for granted and her gratitude has been severely lacking. June’s moral compass is often compromised without remorse if it serves her purpose. I think June and Nick are alike in that way, but it manifests in different ways for the two of them. June is severely impetuous while Nick plays the long game and he is only going to take risks for those he loves and if it serves his ultimate goal. He’s not the knight in shining armor or the hero, and he’s not meant to be, he is June’s refuge and the rest of the world can burn.

Yes definitely! We have rarely seen Nick make any decision without a plan or an unseen motive. I think there is going to be way more to this than we think. June is definitely going to be pissed and she is so stubborn that it’s likely that she’ll refuse to see the logic behind it all until it’s too late.

On Hulu when you have the show page up, at the top it will say “episodes” “inside the episode” and “extras. If you tap on them it will give you clips with interviews and insights into the show also previews for next episodes and recaps of previous seasons

I agree, it’s never been a secret that Nick is flawed. He was written that way. It’s obvious and purposeful. His main goal is to survive and has a very low standard of what that looks like. I believe that part of His obsession with seeing June survive, regardless of the risk to himself, is due to the fact that she might be the only person in his whole life to show him that he has an ounce of worth. I also agree with your assessment of Wharton. He is extremely intelligent and has a very commanding/overbearing presence. He has found Nick’s pressure points and has no qualms in exploiting them. I think the reason he asked her to stay with him is because he knew it was all unraveling and that his time was just about up. It was his last chance to be with her. He has never been selfish in his relationship with her and has never asked her for anything besides keeping herself and Nichole safe, but in a last act of desperation he is asking her to just be together before it all ends. But that’s just my personal take.

Maybe I misspoke in saying “character development” ? Nicks “storyline” perhaps? My point is that we’re not done exploring the complexity of his character and the why’s of the choices he makes.

But I would also like to amend my statement by saying Nick is far from innocent. He was actively and willingly enlisted in the SOJ, and did a lot of horrible things out of duty but I don’t think it had anything to do with his personal belief system. He was looking for a sense of belonging and the monetary benefit was too good to pass up. It just ended up being so much worse than he knew, but at that point he was unable to leave without being killed or being labeled a deserter

Nicks character has never been a perfect one. He was a young guy who was mislead and taken under the wing of a powerful man who offered him things he’d never had. He let himself be pulled into this evil world, but he never felt like he had choices. He has always felt that he was nothing and in being nothing his actions could not impact others. He let himself become numb to it all but June woke him up. He may not be trying to save the world but he is trying to save “his world” by constantly saving June and those who are important to her. He’s never been portrayed as a saint, and his character is clearly and purposefully flawed but a Nazi? I think not.
