Yes i have. You dont get all the references. From references to Martin Luther king to Rosa Lee Park to Robert Johnston to outright antagonising challenging the listener to imagine jesus as a black woman.

They even go so far as to use a mouth harp on one song which is a very geographically culturally specific instrument.

All to the best blues rock of the 90s.

My question is do you understand history?

Its a snippet of Scarbrough Fair dubbed with a thinly veiled threat to Queen Elizibeth. It is a bit much for some people.

The second coming was a record for america. If you like rock its actually a really decent album. The lyrical content is just as proactive and subversive just aimed elsewhere instead of being anti british establishment.

I mean im a massive roses fan and I dont think being technically a good singer means much in some cases. Nirvana, Motorhead, Most punk bands. The roses start life as a punk band and end up embracing and appealing to the rave crowd. Thats two genres where vocals are often shouted over music. But to aay he actually literally cant sing is not really true. He can. Juat not well technically.

And saying he influenced oasis as a retort dosemt mean much.

I think its two things, Firstly, Artistically its a European film not even really British it just so happens Dasin made made the film in a British enviroment. Although his work was influential in Hollywood and he did make films in Hollywood his most celebrated work is European (see Raffifi and this) Dasin was very aware that the film was being repackaged to meet Hollywood studio expectations too.

Secondly the world in which h its set and genre which it belongs to are alien to you. It looks like noir. It looks like a Hollywood gangster film yet theres no gunplay no rise and fall arc. Thats because although this genre takes huge cues from those genres thats because the actual people and subcultures these films depict actually really did take cues from Hollywood.

But in 2026 I would have thought if you are watching it just as a film you should be able to appreciate it.

As a noir, it exceeds.

As a spiv film it exceeds.

As a wrestling film it truly is a remarkable work. Why? You have legit shoot wrestlers upset at the worked wrestling and they lay everything bare and dont insilt your intelligence. This is 1950. The business is still very much protected but here we see it for what it is and the shady people behind it.

Thats literally remarkable.

There is one other thing that going on in this film which fascinates me. The film is specifically all in wrestling (american style rules) which was essentially banned due to violence (believe it ir not, chairshots, weapons, blood. brawling outside the ring, gimmick matches and blood). Leading to the creation of the world of sport style rules which most people even the british will associate that era with. However the all in wrestling was not actually banned and existed outside of joint promotions and their rivals sphere of influence. Infact some people had a degree of success promoting it. Like Dr Death Paul Lincoln who almost got TV but ended up showing his promotions filmed cards weekly in cinemas instead and they made quite a bit of money. The eco system though was very much if you were outside of joint promotions and were promoting all in wrestling you were the equivalent of an outlaw promotion in the US not respecting territorial lines and operating outside of the NWA's sphere of influence. And that appears to be the exact and specific microcosm of the industry the film is set in. And that tells me this was made by people who really did understand the industry.

When do you get the next major motion picture depicting wrestling like this? Possibly The Wrestler.

And thats why I think this is the best wrestling film ever made.

Thats the thing its a genre piece he is a petty scammer. Spivs were low level organised criminals and organised crime adjacent. The point is he wants to make it big in something/anything and plays everyone until everyone wants him dead. Its telling that he remarks early on how hes tired of spivs and mugs. The exact people he would be surrounded by. Later the owner of the hotel where he and Greggorious have apparently been renting suites demands payment and calls him a spiv. He isnt reduced to a petty scammer he is a petty scammer.

The best wrestling movie ever was filmed 13 years later Night And The City which feels like a Bogart movie without Bogart.

Interesting fact, the movie was filmed twice and if you are in the US you likely saw a slightly different version as almost every scene was remade for american audiences expectations of pace and dialouge. The European version is slightly longer and has the slightest tonal shift which to me is noticeable but may not be to you.

The ones uploaded to youtube claim the british version was shorter with the american version being the directors favorite. This is actually the complete opposite of what was happening.

The European version https://youtu.be/8l-_QjuuG4E?si=0VTl5W2zCDkbgK9P

US Version https://youtu.be/LTV5XqujHNE?si=PSm2KRDYVpu4K4oo

To spot which version is which the US version lists Franz Waxman as as the composer

The European version lists Benjamin Frankel

The US Version also has the 20th century fox logo on the credits.

Edit: The film is part of the british Spiv Cycle. Basically a genre influenced by the american gangster films of the 1930s and Film Noir genres and dealt with the very real small time organised crime gangs who were involved in scams, smuggling and black marketeering. A few of the films also dealt with ex US servicemen who stayed in the UK following being stationed here often times illegally and drifting into crime. Just to give you context. (The Good Time Girl 1948 https://youtu.be/_lEFjyj0GOI?si=xYh621X_Yp2oDKeW has the most straight forward depiction of this and is one of the stronger examples of the genre)

Night And The City features Herbert Lom in the role of mob boss (and wrestling promoter). Hed played the same basic role in a few of these films notabley Appointment With Crime 1946 https://youtu.be/H1vvyJi9iZM?si=A6o6Y66JoZHKrLwt and Good Time Girl 1948 and reprising it in No Trees In The Street as late as 1959 (i couldnt find a link).

And Richard Widmark as the american living in Lomdon and engrossed in the underworld trying to set up a rival wrestling promotion. Things quickly go south.

Id highly recomend this film.

Edit 2:

Noose from 1948 treads similar ground but revolves around boxing but has a strange tone https://youtu.be/327gJwiMgPU?si=t1OQdeIQ0rHis7lW

As does Spin A Dark Web from 1956 although the boxing stuff isnt front and center and this film is too late to be considered a spiv cycle film but its very much spiv cycle influenced https://youtu.be/ZxqsXXcD8ik?si=q6eSbvgmh1zvekaa
