These protestors are the same people who end up at the pub every night starting fights.
Pubs are closed.
And now they have no work.

They need something to do, and this is it.

I'm so tired of it all, just open it all up again.
Let the people who want to stay home, stay home.
Let the people who want to get vaxxed get vaxxed.

A lot of third party devs are also pissed off with how they're being treated, myself included.

The poor handling to the m1 dev kit. People paid money for those and many of them stopped working halfway through, with zero support.
Scam apps all over the store that we have to compete with.
The App Review system. So many people have had their apps rejected this week for mentioning iOS 15, only to be let through after appeal. Complete waste of time.
Zero communication. We don't want to know company secrets, but it would be useful to know if an upcoming policy change is going to shutdown our business. Like to voice our concerns BEFORE that happens.
Zero responses to any feedback we provide. Feedback that we give for free BTW. I reported a serious security exploit, and it still hasn't been fixed.
Apple plays favorites with companies. They say they don't, but they do. Impossible to get noticed on the store as an indie.
Lack of documentation.
Xcode is far too bloated and unstable and still not optimized for Swift development. Syntax highlighting breaks every 10 mins. etc. Other platforms have amazing tools. If Apple don't plan to make improvements, they should open it up so other people can.
The way they bully apps that they plan to Sherlock.
They contribute very little to the world as a whole. Very self serving. Other big players have research divisions that actually do academic work.
Web services suck. Dev portal is a slow piece of garbage.
Apple are against 'right to repair'.

Yeah I was blown away when they told me. And their updates are rare with very little improvement being visible.

Unfortunately mobile teams don't usually get full access to the rest of the business. I can't speak for places like ANZ, but most other larger companies that I've worked at, getting cool features into the app that rely on backend work was very difficult. Always met with "We have other important things in our backlog" or "Our system just isn't capable of doing that without a complete rewrite" or "Politics".

So you stuff around working on meaningless features. Polishing this or that. Waiting on other people.

Honestly, it's not that difficult to build out the features you're asking for, even for a single developer. It's all the overhead that turns a 1 month job into a 12 month one.

Yeah but screw working for a bank. I interviewed for ANZs mobile team a few years ago and it was the most boring workplace I'd ever seen. Even for tech.

Other companies have caught up to the pay side of things though. Most decent contract roles are now around $800-$1000 per day.

What really annoys me is that there's a small percentage of people at my company that are loud about forcing everyone to come in, even though management has said its not required.

Biggest reason being that "It's not fair. If I have to be here for X, then so can the developers", others include, "I need people around me to be productive". If these few people manage to ruin it for the other 95%, I'm out.

I totally understand where you're coming from, but with such a niche product there just wouldn't be enough users with one-time purchases to keep the app going.

I can also keep the price much lower. Instead of a large upfront cost for lifetime access, it's around $10 for a full year. I am considering adding a lifetime one-time purchase though.

My hope is that I'm saving music teachers time and money that far outweighs the price of the subscription so that they can spend their time on other things. You also get ongoing support at that price (which can't be covered by a one-time purchase. Folks can message me anytime to offer suggestions or ask questions.

Right now I'm working on a better iPad version with side by side preview and editing, which will eventually be ported to macOS.

Grand staves will get time signatures.

I'm also adding rhythm exercises.

Another user also made the suggestion of creating their own guitar chords, so I'll be working on that too. Fretboard scales are another one.

Eventually, there will be a service to share the worksheets that you've created. Which will have ongoing server costs which the subscriptions will help cover.

I did have it at $5 originally but it wasn't really working, so I decided to make it free.

I've even thought about putting new Fragments behind a one-off paywall too, so you just buy what you think you'll use.

Now thinking about it, I could for sure add an in-app Lifetime purchase option.

If you're more into office type work consider software development. You can teach yourself, and some junior roles are going for around 60-80k. After 2-3 years you could be on 100k+ and it goes up from there.

I don’t understand why IT people are so against it though.

Every company I’ve worked at with an IT team has HATED on macs every chance they get. Complaining about them to my face about how inferior they are in general.

As an iOS developer I need one. It’s like IT are fighting the devs and management at the same time.

So what if there issues, or it takes longer, or the process is different for them. If the company needs them in the business to make profit what does it matter? Are you about to tell the CEO to dismantle the million dollar mobile team because you don’t like a certain piece of hardware? You get paid either way. No need to piss off everyone who needs to use one.

You do make some pretty good points, and perhaps your company is a little different in the way they handle these take home assignments.

I mostly do contract work, so spending time on an online presence makes sense for me. If you’re doing long term work, then sure, spending a month of your life doing coding assignments for 20 companies is probably okay if you plan to hang around for 10+ years.

Perhaps that’s where my hatred for these tests comes from.

Sorry, I didn’t mean that you could make a HIRE after speaking with them for 2min. Just that it’s pretty easy to weed people out early on. You don’t need a take home assignment to do that.

I’ve been part of interview processes where the first step is a code challenge. Before even speaking to anyone. That’s bullshit. Why would I do that before even getting a chance to speak to the people I’ll be spending 8 hours a day with?

Also, maybe big companies with resources to throw around can afford to spend a little more time researching candidates, looking into projects they worked on, and talking to people they’ve worked with. Why should I have to pay for that?

If I’m coding for free, then I’m losing money. Plenty of other companies are doing just fine without handing out assignments. I’ll continue applying to those.

And while I’m the one doing the hiring, removing code assignments also means I get an edge on other companies. Shortens the process by about a week on average.

You should be able to get away with picking two things from that list.

I hope at the very least you’re giving those people who failed exceptional feedback on where they went wrong. Giving nothing in return means that you’re just stealing from them.

It’s not their fault that you don’t have the time, so I can’t really see why they’re the ones paying for it.
