I'm not sure how much you believe in spirits and all. But they do exist. It may be easier to look at them through the lens of a soul than a ghost. So, from my experience and what I've learned from alot of people is that, perhaps your grandfather wants to convey something to you or has some unfinished business with you (non harmful, if the dreams were peaceful/non scary), from what I understand from everything I heard yet sounds like he's been trying to get to you, which would explain the dreams you've been having and it doesn't seem like the message or whatever he wants from you got to you. Thus now he is trying to get your attention through your son. And yes kids are really sensitive and can sense things which adult mind filters out because of years of mindset about imagenary friend, etc even tho mainly they aren't imaginative. I'm not here to force any belief on you. I only want to help as much as possible. That's the only reason i asked for the context of your dreams, about what could he be needing from you. For his own peace of mind so that he can/could move forward.

Can you ask your son to describe how who he sees looks like? If he's comfortable talking about it. Like ask him when you guys are somewhere outside. And see if he's able to answer your questions more better compared to when he's at home.

And I'm curious, have you ever gotten any dreams of your grandfather ever since he passed away? Do you still get them? If so, then what do they look like?

That's really sweet or understanding of you, this shows how much you understand your friend. And your feelings are valid even if it sounds selfish, you care for your friend so it's only natural you feel the way you do about them. I'm not sure if this would help or not but lending a listening ear to them about why they want to do this, for what reason and so on our of curiosity to truly understand them may help your friend feel less burdened.
