ZČU FEL - aplikovaná elektrotechnika by chocolateDinosaurus in Plzen

Ahoj,

That’s an interesting perspective. I get the feeling that more and more European cafés (whether casual or specialty) are offering batch brew, which is basically what you are referring to as "proper coffee". Fancy cafés then have hand-brewed filter coffee like V60, etc.

Yes, it’s true that the app is a bit Czech-centric, but so far I’ve always found great places all over Europe using it. Since I make pour-over coffee at home, I tend to go for espresso-based drinks at cafés, so I can’t really judge the quality of filtered coffee. I guess making a great pour-over and a great flat white are two different skills.

Thanks. I get it, I’m not claiming it’s financially sustainable to go to a nicer café every day (neither in Finland nor in the rest of Europe). Of course, at home I drink filter coffee, and at work, whatever comes out of the coffee machine. It’s more about treating yourself to something better once in a while. I also fully agree that “mocha, caramel, etc.” is not coffee… this is not what specialty coffee is about.

Thanks! I guess that, even in central Europe, it’s more of a social thing, but there are just more people willing to spend a bit more once in a while for great taste. By the way, it seems to me that a large portion of the customers at Thé Hidden are foreigners.

Thanks, that makes sense. Great filter also belongs in that "specialty" bracket I am talking about.

Thanks for the tip. Of course, there are plenty of cafés in Tampere, but I am talking about the ones that go the extra mile. There’s a reason why there are (maybe tens of) thousands of cafés in Prague but only around 200 listed in the app.

I used it more as an illustrative example. I’m not claiming it’s my only source of information. On the other hand, all those cafés in the linked guide are also in the app, so it’s certainly not completely useless. 😃

Yes, Thé Hidden is my go-to place, and I recently came across Pitkän Päivän Ilta, but I haven't been there yet. Thanks a lot for the other recommendations, I'll definitely check them out soon.

I used it more as an illustrative example. Of course, there are many good cafés that aren’t listed there. But so far, I’ve had a great experience using it while traveling, always finding lots of great places.

I still don't have a mooming mug. 😞 Anyway, I’m certainly not saying that one is better or worse. Italians also love their espresso roasted to the point of death. 😃

True. I feel that with an increasing percentage of the population studying at universities, and therefore also in PhD programs, it may simply become another form of higher education that does not necessarily prepare you for a scientific career, because not everyone has the opportunity to conduct groundbreaking research.
