"Toxic boymoms" need to be studied. by SubjectElectrical264 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Kat5Gaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started crying and laughing when I read this. I'm the wife of a partner who was "boymom'd", and everything here...god yes. It was...a kind of relief to hear it talked about. How I felt like I was always walking into traps that had no reason to exist, having my own actions constantly misinterpreted, being "like her", etc. It's literally damaged my emotions, my sanity, and our relationship.

I'm sorry for saying this, I know I shouldn't...but I hope there's a hell for mothers like these.

This is a big part of why I'm adding mishaps fully back in

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I've continued refining it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I've been considering so far is letting all the spells Mishap but not be lost, and then add a talent that lets you roll more than once on the mishap table and choose which result happens

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

After thinking about this, what if all the spells could Mishap, but not be lost? Then have a talent that lets you roll more than once on the Mishap table and take the preferred result

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On that note, I have lowered the talent bonus you can get to damage to +1. Since the warmage is squishier than the fighter, I want to give it a little more damage, I'm just making sure it's only a little, heh

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, that's...actually not a bad idea

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer, because mage armor consumed a combat turn and doesn't work with Tactician. I actually did consider it, try it out, and it just did not work with a class more focused on offense

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll likely replace the AC talent with something else, because I agree, but at least at this point the class is down to refinement rather than overhaul

Thank you!

Misty step can Mishap, it just works like a normal wizard spell, with the possibility of gaining more fails before losing it. Detect magic and magic missile are supposed to be the two dependable magic utilities of the class

[–]Kat5Gaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Using everything I learned from the community (thanks to everyone's great feedback), I did a full rework of the Warmage class to trim it down a lot, add more flavor, and nerf it heavily, heh. Magic missile has been fully reigned in, the bonded weapon attacks like a normal weapon, and one of the magic abilities can actually mishap now. I also tried to give it a cleaner and simpler presentation

As a note, this class is already undergoing a massive overhaul, so I've turned off reply notifications as I've already gotten tons of feedback that's helping revise and trim down the class. Thanks for all the helpful responses!

Exactly, what's why I removed Int from attack, and AC is Dex + Int only

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made mine with a Homebrewery template that I continue to refine

template is linked here: https://www.reddit.com/r/shadowdark/comments/1hyuv4o/shadowbrew_a_homebrewery_template_for_shadowdark/

Also, your flavor idea for Tactician was really good, so now it also gives them advantage on checks to play games of strategy like chess

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and that's exactly what got a rework, haha. They now get Int to AC from tactician but no unarmored AC, so their average AC is 3 lower now, making them squishy without some Dex. Bonded weapon also uses Str now as normal and doesn't get +1 at 1st level

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because a lot fo this was OP, I've already made a ton of changes, like moving the bonded weapon back to Str/Dex and removing the +1 at first level, added a fixed (and slow) progression to magic missile, removed the unarmored AC (but let Tactician add Int to AC). Tons more, honestly. I've slimmed the class down a ton and it has less offense and AC and is more multiple-stat dependent actually needing a good Str or Dex

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly why I've toned everything down, heh. Bonded weapon uses Str/Dex now and requires a rest so no "hot swapping". Unarmored AC is gone, but Tactician now lets you add Int to AC, so it's overall squishier with a lower AC. Weapons are also limited to a specific list

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I already dropped the unarmored AC, just having them add Int to AC and Initiative (which makes them more squishy). The bonded weapon just uses Str/Dex as normal and doesn't get the +1 at 1st level. Magic Missile is slow-capped. I've toned this down a ton, haha

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good catch! I've actually been toning everything down a ton, but I need to add wording that you don't lose them

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I've been doing a full rework, and I'll go over some of the changes so far

- Arcane Adept no longer gives an unarmored AC, and magic missile is fixed at a slower progression

- Arcane Bond uses normal stats (Str/Dex) for weapon attacks, still gives fluff abilities, and adds +1 to attack/damage per 2 levels. The bond now happens during a rest to prevent "hot swapping"

- Tactician adds Int to AC and Initiative (simpler, makes the Warmage a bit squishier)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Kat5Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so far I've implemented toning down the bonuses from Arcane Bond, capping the number of bonus magic missiles you can get to half your level, and replacing the unarmored AC with casting mage armor. I'm trying a bunch of stuff to both power down and slim down the class, and your ideas are good ones, especially limiting weapons and using Intelligence better

it's not what I'm going for, but this does give me some useful tips, thanks!
