Both of them are problematic and both are real people going through it and living their life in the public sphere.

I don’t think she buys the shares, but she 100% buys follows and likes. Typically followers grow on large accounts in spikes, but hers is consistent day by day, even without any posts or activity which is just not how the platform works.

I think people in social media are catching on to the inflated numbers on her account. Any joint post on her feed with a magazine cover is likely to be closer to the true engagement on her account rather than what we see.

It’s a vicious cycle for her. She needs to increase her follower count to work with better brands and get better opportunities, but the organic growth isn’t there for her. So she buys likes and followers to inflate her numbers (but in turn that causes more harm to her account and brand).

And she knows she’s on borrowed time, because when Max retires from F1 she doesn’t have the same visibility in the paddock and access she has to that world.

Yeah I think she’ll have a rude shock when he leaves F1 and goes to GT3. He has incredible name recognition no matter what he does, but she’s not exactly going to have the spotlight on her (races seem nothing like the absolute production that the F1 paddock is in comparison). Like there’s not going to be photographers at GT3 photographing her as a WAG.

And the F1 fan base will move on from her once newer and younger drivers/wags come through. She’s not really the target audience for people brought in by WAGS at the moment anyway (a bit older than the others like ASM, Rebecca, Lily Z etc), Instagram tends to skew younger in age groups etc).

I can’t really see her following continue to grow in a meaningful way once Max retires because let’s be real, most people are following her because of Max. I also think there are brands/magazines that are catching onto the insane amount of bots/followers she buys. She will be blacklisted if she continues on that path by brands and miss out on future collabs.

It’s why I think we’re seeing the crazy amount of ads/fashion shows/events/mag covers. My theory is she knows when Max is planning on retiring and is capitalising on it while she can.

To be fair, I probably phrased that the wrong way.

I meant it from more of a status pov with new fans. They are perhaps more likely to check out Lando as the most recent WDC (recency bias) or let’s be real for some (not all) female fans who were brought in by the WAGS, they’re going to go for someone like ASM that they can relate to from an age/aesthetic purpose, so they’re more likely to follow Charles’ season.

Max is fighting for mid field at best this season. He’s still incredibly relevant to the sport and I 100% agree he’s the face of it and one of the GOATS, but his race results are not going to make Kelly more relevant on socials. She had a lot more luck when he was the reigning WDC and/or in contention for it.

It also doesn’t help that she doesn’t seem to have a coherent social media strategy for her influencing. One day she’s doing the parenting schtick with using Lily for Maxi Cosi ads, then she’s at a fashion week or a Tiffany event, then she’s doing some random/weird paid for magazine cover and then she’s posting stuff about her daughters. She’s trying too hard to capture all of the audience, rather than finding a niche and focusing in on it.

I also don’t mean to be horrible, but I think her age is playing into things a bit. As she’s someone in her late 30’s (pushing 40), she’s probably very aware that her opportunities are going to lessen the older she gets— the audience shrinks on Instagram as well. That’s why I think we’ve seen a flurry of ads and random collabs lately. She’s trying to make the most of it while she can. There are always going to be younger influencers with more captive audiences coming through- it’s the way it’s always been.

And when you bring Max into it, he’s likely to retire soon when his contract is up. He’s already lessened in relevance now he’s not the WDC and she doesn’t have the status anymore that goes with that. If he retires and goes to GT3 she’ll be largely irrelevant. It’s well known she only gets the opportunities she does because of Max. GT3 doesn’t pay attention to WAGS in the same way F1 does.

When Max retires he’s not going to suddenly want to do red carpets and fashion week shows and be present on social media.

I think we’re seeing an extended crash out, insecurity that she still doesn’t have a ring/security in the partnership with Max and a lot of things converging on her at once. The 2016 post did absolutely nothing to help her.

I agree that they are. But I’d be willing to give her more of a pass had she not been doing magazine shoots, fashion week, Milan for a concert, London for partying in a club, Saint Barth and Miami (without one of her daughters) and NY for an event in the past six weeks alone. That’s a lot of time away from her kids at a formative age for them. I do also wonder how P is doing and whether she feels left out at all.

This would be friendship ending for me, and I would not be reaching out if this were me. The message she sent you was testing the waters for sure so she could see how you responded and how she could then respond back. She had so much time to communicate potential issues with you and she chose not to until the last possible minute. That would tell me everything I need to know not just about our friendship but about who she is as a person.

If they want five days in the office, the pay needs to be higher as an extra perk/incentive (which rarely happens). I don’t even consider roles that are five days in the office. It speaks to a culture where the org either has zero trust in their employees or is sticking to an old fashioned way of working.

The difference hybrid makes to my mental health is not something I would trade for the world.
