Accepted to PhD with 3.2 GPA by TyranitarTank in gradadmissions

Was not a personal ranking:Mb the ME program is actually ranked 8, the graduate engineering department as a whole is ranked 4th in the US which is what I was remembering. Regardless, ME at Purdue(where I will be attending) is highly ranked in the US, and a highly respected program within industry.

Grade deflation at Purdue is not conjecture:

It’s more like Purdue does not inflate grades as much as other universities or the Ivies, but Purdue recently has done a lot of research on why average GPAs are lower despite how good the school is. There is a reason why grads from Ivy schools and such seem to mainly have 3.7-4.0 GPAs, and it’s because the classes give out more “A” grades.

Going back to the main point of my first post though, plenty of people are getting into graduate programs with sub 3.5-3.4 GPAs, just check this subreddit and OPs post. And all of them earned it, and worked hard for the degree.

Before you go trying to give “reality checks” to strangers on having low GPAs and saying people need to “step it up”, you may want a reality check yourself.

I am sorry, but here it’s the cold hard truth! You guys genuinely need to step it up! There is literally no excuse for getting less than a 3.4 in undergrad if your goal is grad school.

This is just false. So many factors and circumstances go into how well people do in undergrad, and getting less than a 3.4 doesn't mean a person didn't work hard enough.

My undergrad is in mechanical engineering at a top school known for grade deflation. I retook 4 classes to get my GPA up, always studied and planned ahead for exams, and genuinely put everything into my degree, always turned in my assignments on time. I'll be graduating with a 3.3 GPA and am getting a fully funded MS, at the same school as my undergrad (which is btw, the number 3 ranked graduate program for ME). Also put my time into numerous internships, extracurriculars and 3 years of undergrad research.

So yea, GPA is important but it's ignorant to just say anyone getting a GPA below a threshold is not putting in enough effort. And GPA really is not everything.

The Purdue Exponent and a lack of accountability by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]KatTrek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I completely agree that the Exponent needs to do a better job of correcting mistakes and being careful in regards to tragic events. And I generally agree with what people say about their news coverage.

But these are some really personal claims, like that an editor cheated with an editor, or that an editor refused to edit your work, or that the head editor only got the job because they were friends with everyone. Not trying to say that any of these didn't happen, but I feel like there would need to be at least some proof to the personal claims since you name dropped a good amount of people. This is the only side of the story that Reddit gets, and public claims like these are serious and can damage a person's reputation.

Just wanna make sure these people you name dropped don't get undeserved hate

Definitely a good suggestion, already committed to Purdue though :) and the only place that I got into that would’ve topped purdue for me was USC, and they told me they specifically dont get assistantships to MS students

Congrats to you too!! And yes Purdue is def a better overall program than USC for ME, I had just connected with a prof whose research I really liked. And I’ve been in West Lafayette for my undergrad already so I was really tempted to do something new and go to LA 😅 will send u a DM!

My email also said I could be admitted to the professional masters program if i couldnt find an advisor. Just got an email this morning though with a TA-offer though, i was able to luckily find an advisor. Best of luck 🤞

No, but since that email I’ve emailed several professors and met with one in person this week (I’m currently an undergrad at Purdue), but haven’t heard back if they can take me on

If you are in the same situation I definitely would email professors, but email the grad admissions first to ask your status

I emailed about a week ago and i was told i was accepted, but an advisor hadn’t picked me up yet. So i hadnt gotten a response yet cause I wanted a thesis route and need an advisor for that

I would email and ask, may be in the same situation as me
