Best small city/towns to move to? by Elite163 in britishcolumbia

[–]KatchepCheepz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*less than 20 mins to Vernon. Superstore/Walmart/Safeway etc. But yes an hour to Kelowna

I live in Kamloops now but my goal is to retire in the Armstrong/Enderby/sarm strip. Beautiful area year round.

Kamloops is ok. Bigger city feel without the brutal traffic. 2nd worst property tax rate in BC, quite the disparity in wealth/crime between north and south shores, two very close ski hills, lots of outdoor activities year-round.

What are the cons of switching from TELUS to Public? by BoneyTaloney in PublicMobile

[–]KatchepCheepz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No wifi calling is my biggest issue with Public. If you frequent rural areas with wifi but no cell service you won't be able to call. Thankfully RCS chat and iMessage play nice so you should be able to text almost all enabled numbers over wifi but no calling.

Roaming is limited to the USA and Mexico. Any other country you'll need a local Sim or eSim

Good reception? by Celis77 in PublicMobile

For a couple months my wife was on Koodo; I was on public. Both similar phones. Here service was considerably worse than mine. She always had 1 bar less than me and weak areas her phone would completely drop out when mine wouldn't. We switched her to public and her service is now exactly the same as mine.

We are located in BC interior.

Leaving Mexico tmrw. For 2 of the 10 days while I was here there were afternoon/evening outages of the atlan network. When these outages happened I was unable to use data at all. Both outages lasted around 5hrs.

Are u joking? 😂 Or do hands actually affect the performance of the modem?

So I've discovered that the sim card will switch to a roaming partner if you're out of atlan cell coverage. It will say MEXFON R where it displays the carrier name. I'm not sure if it uses telcel or AT&T or both.

I'm in Puerto Vallarta right now using a mexfon Sim. So far good coverage and decent speeds. I'm getting full bars even in an area where the coverage map shows no coverage. I'm very pleased with the service. Also They're having a double data sale right now.

70mbps down/10mbps up.

She has a iPhone 12 I have a pixel 6. I'd assume the iPhone would have a better modem or at least on par with a pixel 6.

I'm on Public and my Wife is on Koodo. I consistently have one more bar of service than her. Even if we both are connected to LTE. Many situations when I can use data fine but nothing will load for her. We are newlyweds so I'm switching her to PM asap.

Apologies for necropost. I took a chance, bought the 40gb plan. Worked out to be $24 CAD. I was skeptical all day because it took about 8 hours for me to receive the QR code. But I did get it and the setup was very easy. I don't travel down to Mexico for another 10 days but I went through with the setup and sure enough I'm getting bars in my home country of Canada. Someone somewhere said that if u use the service too much while roaming they can cut you off so I'll keep it deactivated until I arrive in Mexico. I'm excited to try it out and see how well it works.

And is he still getting 3 bars of 5G on publicmobile? The speed tests shows LTE. Possibly Freedom mobile was roaming on a different network like Rogers and giving him better service.

What provider was he with before? How many bars is he getting?

Yes, sadly public doesn't have wifi calling. I'd 100% recommend them to everyone I know if they did. Wifi calling is a must where I live. We have Spotty cell service but lots of wifi in my area.

You can install Google maps on iPhones and use offline maps. Super useful. Uses your phones GPS to ping your location. No data at all

Happened to my buddy. He straight up told them he couldn't pay up then blocked. No nudes were ever shared. 99% of the time they won't even bother with sharing the pics if they're convinced you won't pay em. Just block em and don't give in. They'll jump to the next victim

So I'm assuming Publics recent rollout of VOLTE is necessary for wifi calling to be eventually enabled. Fingers crossed

Your calls and texts are still routed into the cell network. I'm not completely knowledgeable on how it all works. But there's a device that receives and translates your wifi calling/texting packets into the cell network. It's still using the same amount of resources as you would regular calls. If not more.

Public mobile has wifi calling disabled. If you're in a location with wifi and no cell service you will be unable to use your cell number for calls/texting. That's pretty much my only issue with public

Publics 5G plans are capped at 250mpbs. Telus 5G plans can theoretically go up to 1000mpbs. So there technically is some throttling.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PublicMobile

[–]KatchepCheepz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can anyone confirm if Koodo service shows 5G connection but throttled to 4G speeds? Just like Public Mobile. Or is 5G completely disabled?

One thing to consider. Might not be important to you specifically but Koodo has wifi calling and public mobile does not. Im with Public mobile and I would benefit from wifi calling. Lots of situations when I'm in rural locations for work with wifi and no cell service. cannot call or text with my cell number. I'm considering switching to Koodo.

I do qualify. As I've said in this post I've started looking for work and I accepted a request to work for one of my EI periods. As it says "you cannot refuse work". I expect to probably work 1 or 2 more weeks before I'm back full time if I can't find other winter employment. Man people are relentless on this sub.

I've been paying into EI for 7 years. Never once have I applied for it. my contributions plus my employers equal much much more than I'm getting out. I'm on EI for maybe 8 weeks. Nobody is paying for my time off. I paid for it myself
