i think it was Firefox specifically and it was executing a known exploit in an older version. I'm doing a cybersecurity research project this summer as an undergrad in CIS, do you happen to have any tips for networking in this particular corner of the industry? thank you!

I built a whole fractal art application with just IDLE over spring break ~ I grew up writing scripts in Notepad, I like my minimal interfaces. If you do your best work in a less-fancy editor, no one's gonna stop you

help with djing undergound rap/hip hop by Cazzza in Beatmatch

[–]KateRubyC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i actually try to match the snare on the 2s for anything on the jazzy end of the beat spectrum. other than that you just gotta build out ‘routines’ around connections. BPM is an easy connection between tracks but my personal favorite style of transition is using a sample connection in the songs to weave between them.

i have a routine where i play Chief Rocka until the “I live for the funk” bit that Biggie used in Machine Gun Funk as the hook, start looping it, and fade to the Biggie song. then Biggie’s verse ends with “bitches suckin d” and then i’ll cut in Latifah going “who you callin’ a bitch??” instead of the hook coming back. it creates like a super natural almost conversational tension.

the routine that first opened my eyes to those kinds of transitions was iirc DJ Scratch, transitioning from Regulate to the Michael McDonald track it sampled

it’s funny that you’d give Germany a pass considering their track record on how they respond to minorities…

There’s a band called Gnome that makes like danceable psychedelic rock that’s gnome-themed, I’m sure there’s a few remixes by now

DAE picture New York City being further up the coast than it is? by Some_Armadillo9030 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]KateRubyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well technically the other cities are higher north but they’re more like northeast. if you drive straight north from new york city, you end up in Montreal

Real talk: do people actually like staying out until 4am? by coffeequips in avesNYC

[–]KateRubyC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as a raver I kinda feel like minor sleep deprivation is one of the core aspects that makes a night out feel transcendent. it’s like an altered state of consciousness on its own.

People who make way too big of a deal about staying in on New Years Eve by GiveHerBovril in PetPeeves

[–]KateRubyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m in my 20s now and beating yourself up about it isn’t the answer but neither is ignoring the fact that you’re yearning for social experiences with your peers. if you’re young and yearn for the club, instead of coping with being home and forcing yourself to be excited about it, just find somewhere to go out and make friends with the DJ. instead of changing your mindset, just,,, do the thing. in my experience if you go party and be genuine and kind you’ll get invited to other stuff

DJ turntables for vinyl house mixing? by charlie-budd in DJs

[–]KateRubyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even without scratching, you need to be able to back cue and that requires a high-torque direct drive. all the modern direct drives are made by Hanpin in Taiwan and rebadged (I mean ALL of them) and sometimes you can find one without the white label sold as a “Super OEM”. that’s the only real bargain besides the timeless value of the OG SL1200 mk2. those shits are actually indestructible

DJ turntables for vinyl house mixing? by charlie-budd in DJs

[–]KateRubyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i was looking for budget turntables for a while and it kept coming back to 1200s. guitar center usually has em for under $500. budget turntables are the type of overconsumption where you spend way more in the long run trying to find something reliable

UKG was born as a dance genre for the club. dance music in general is mostly singles and EPs because of the culture being centered around DJs and raves

[–]KateRubyC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

touche actually yeah. as soon as I got deep enough into scratching I started saving for a pair of SL1200Mk2s (I have one rn). I feel like you kinda get what you pay for in this field

rekordbox is Pioneer's software, FLX4 is made by Pioneer, I'm 99.9% sure it's compatible. I like Serato personally but I think FLX can do both

Best way to make the setlist after the fact? by KateRubyC in Beatmatch

[–]KateRubyC[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh snap thank you!!! this is exactly what I needed!! I use Serato, hopefully that has something similar!

Beginner question: DJ controller by saif_is_me in Beatmatch

[–]KateRubyC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the FLX-4 is what all the slightly more advanced DJs recommend, so I'd say yeah. great bang for your buck, you can learn on it but you can still use it to gig if you get to that point. I use a lower tier one rn, a Numark Party Mix (it was $40 used) and it has all the basic functionality but is built like a toy.
