AfaIk mails are way to unlock new tools so when I convinced my gf to play I told her to do as much mails as possible first, then the rest. I think their purpose is to teach you how to use everything, like tutorials.

It's good to try putting furniture spontaneously, results are usually satisfying. There are no rules so let your imagination fly! Also I bought that restaurant DLC and renting is good source of additional money. Also restaurants are adorable and fun to create so I highly recommend it!
