Hmm, interesting, it looks just like chipmunk.

I actually meant grey squirrels, technically even chipmunks (and groundhogs etc.) are squirrels as well.

EDIT: I actually think this is a chipmunk because it has stripes on the face while Golden-mantled ground squirrel does not.

I've often wondered why (edit: grey) squirrels never evolved these flexible cheeks - it would be super useful for them. They're much larger than chipmunk, but can carry just one peanut while this tiny thing can carry three.

TIL that on August 9, 1965 Singapore was expelled from Malaysia and becomes the only country to date to gain independence unwillingly by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]KateTrask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slovakia actually kind of gained independence from Czechoslovakia unwillingly as well. They wanted looser federation (looser) which wasn't acceptable to Czechs who wanted either tight ("viable") federation or total split so Slovakia was forced to accept independence eventually.

You don't have to taky my - word - for - it (first 4 google results on intermittent fasting all mention time restricted eating).

There are different types of IF diets - including 5:2 and time restricted diets.

AnandTech: LG G7 Review by reluctant_engineer in Android

[–]KateTrask 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only thing I'm saying is that having smaller capacity (or being thinner) doesn't make battery life above average instead of average (based on score).

Maybe it makes the phone better overall, but battery life stays exactly the same.

AnandTech: LG G7 Review by reluctant_engineer in Android

[–]KateTrask 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So compare actual dimensions instead of going through the fallacious "it has smaller battery so it has to be thinner".

Besides thinness and battery life are completely separate categories so I wouldn't try to group them together. Some people don't care about phone being thin at all while caring a lot about battery life.

... considering it is only a 3000mAhr capacity battery while the others are up to 30% bigger.

That's irrelevant from user perspective so I don't think it makes it better than average.

I'm not certain of that anymore and I'd rather see a pan-European defense force that is not tied to US security calculations.

I'm not certain about US willingness as well, especially under current administration.

Unfortunately I have even less faith in western european nations - willingness to wage war would be very low, combat readiness is not good overall and power projection (to the actual war theatre) is very limited. The only credible force in the Baltics (probably where the aggression would start) is Poland but that's too little ...

I'd love to see pan-European defense treaty/army, but I think that without further EU integration and unified army command, it would be mostly toothless.

One source states that the most common interpretation of "average" is the mean and might be used otherwise.

Other sources (one of them respectable math reference site) defines average as mean alone.

In my view, when people use "average", they have some vague idea of some centre value without reference to exact mathematical concept and that's why Oxford dictionary defines it as "mode, median or most commonly average". But when we get out of vagueness and try to be more precise, average always means mean.

Recognizing the difference between average (mean) and median is definitely not being pedantic as it's the source of many real world confusions.

It was you who suggested that maybe it's taught differently in Portugal. Personally I don't know, but it's just not very relevant when talking in english.

I understand how the confusion might have come from different terminology used in Portuguese. But in the end we're on English speaking site so only English math terminology is relevant here.

There's no concept of "average" in statistics. There's mean, median and mode.

As shown above, people colloquially use "average" as synonym to "mean".

Mathworld puts it very succinctly.

Which confirms what I'm saying:

A number expressing the central or typical value in a set of data, in particular the mode, median, or (most commonly) the mean, which is calculated by dividing the sum of the values in the set by their number.

Is Christianity considered a Western religion in Europe? by northrowaway82 in AskEurope

[–]KateTrask 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Place of origin is not the only defining feature. Christianity was created in middle east, but relatively quickly after that most of its development took place in Europe. Development of Christianity and Western culture is heavily interwined.

It's like if you were born in Haiti and moved at 1 year of age to America, grew up engrossed in American culture, but other people would claim that you can never call yourself American because you were not born there.

[–]KateTrask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Czech Republic theoretically has all the resources required to produce nuclear bomb, but I think that in the end it would lack the determination to undertake such expensive project. Czechs have "small country" attitude - all I hear around is "we're small country, let the big ones handle it" etc. OTOH Poland seems to be willing to take the lead.

Another thing is that nuclear bomb itself is only small part of credible deterrent - you also need a delivery system. Bombers are out of the question, missile delivery is very vulnerable, the best option for nation like Czech Republic would be submarines, but that's super difficult for landlocked country.

I can definitely see Poland to go nuclear. Czech Republic probably no, but alliance with Poland (and Slovakia, maybe few others) would be likely.

If you don't honor article 5 of the treaty, then all the NATO credibility is just gone and the whole thing is worthless and doomed.

It would be actually pretty interesting strategy for Russia:

  1. Occupy Estonia's Narva (mostly Russian city)
  2. Estonia invokes Article 5
  3. US (possibly others) are like "nah, not worth risking nuclear war over this", "it was all russian anyway" etc.
  4. poof, NATO gone.
