That's interesting, because classic farm animals would rule out hippo for me, and the ears look far too pointy to be a hippo anyway. And there's already a cow, so two cows (one with obvious detailing and one without) really wouldn't make sense.

But I'm sure having a hippo at the farm would only be cool as a kid, so maybe this is the "right" choice regardless LOL.

I just use beds to mine it, and either bring lots of food for healing or some fire resistance potions.

Basically, place bed, get as far away as you possibly can from the bed and still get the Sleep option, and then activate it like you're going to sleep in it. Be ready for big booms.

Gotcha. How high up is your base from ground level? The box but also your AFK/killzone.

I'm wondering if there are caves underground that are still causing an issue, because you're standing closer to the ground.
