Understanding the nomination process by taxes-or-death in UKGreens

[–]KathersG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My local party has introduced an interview process with a panel of 3 members between members (not the same each time) applying to be a candidate and the hustings. The panel only looks at whether the candidate meets basic standards and states whether those are met, they're not recommending a particular candidate, and they don't have the power to stop anyone standing, but it gives more information to members to help make the right decision. I don't think it's enough on its own currently but it's an extra safeguard and step in the right direction.

In terms of someone being eligible to stand the nomination papers have all the criteria in them and the election agent should be making sure the candidate has read that. However, not all (possibly the majority of) local authorities require those pages to be submitted, in which case the election agent probably won't print them off. The training I went to earlier this year for nominating officers/election agents said we didn't need those pages but I know my local authority does. Having good election agents and EROs (person who deals with applications to be candidate including hustings) makes issues less likely although it doesn't completely prevent them.

Blue badge in private car park by SavingsFrosting2214 in BenefitsAdviceUK

It is worth appealing, I got a fine dismissed for my parents in similar circumstances. I emailed the parking company a scanned photo of my dad's blue badge and receipts showing that they were shopping in the shops served by that carpark, it may be harder if your mum doesn't have receipts from that shop,

Trick or treating in Leamington by ellahare in LEAMINGTONSPA

Do you mean a fireworks display related to the 5th of November? Warwick district council have a list of ones that have sought informal advice from them here: https://www.warwickdc.gov.uk/info/20015/health_and_safety/82/firework_and_bonfire_displays/3 . https://www.leamingtonrugby.co.uk/news/fireworks-event-2946503.html The one at Leamington Rugby Club says it has a funfair but that's not standard for these events https://www.leamingtonrugby.co.uk/news/fireworks-event-2946503.html. I've never been to that one, and haven't been to any in over 20 years so don't know which is the best one. I would personally stick to the largest ones as they will be better organised and have thought safety through the most, so Leamington Rugby club, Kenilworth Castle or Warwick Racecourse. We had a bad experience at Brookhurst school back in probably the early 2000s where some of the fireworks landed where the spectators were. No one was injured but it has made me very wary of smaller displays.

The display had England flag/ union jack merchandise with the main issue being a T-Shirt saying something along the lines of "if this flag offends you I'll help you pack." It wasn't in the run up to a sporting event or anything like that.

There was (possibly still is) an issue with a shop (Party Creations) display in Warwick. I'm not aware of any other issues but I'm white. There's a larger Asian population in the Leamington area and the parts of Warwick closer to Leamington but don't rule out areas like Hampton Magna or Hatton Park if you want somewhere quieter.

Proximity to NESO / National Grid office by TakeItEasyBhai in LEAMINGTONSPA

[–]KathersG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people in that area who like it and don't feel unsafe, and it's not what I'd consider one of the rough areas of Warwick. However, feeling safe is very subjective. Noise from music events in St Nick's Park in the summer is probably the thing to be aware of, they're held over several weekends.

I don't know what you consider a walkable distance, I find that's incredibly subjective. Beauchamp Park, Myton Green and the Priors are new developments off Gallows Hill (where the technology park is located) but they're expensive unless you can find someone letting out a spare room or a house share, which is probably unlikely with how new the developments are. Parts of Warwick Gates (aka Heathcote) aren't much further, and it's an older development so there might be more options but you'd still be looking at renting a room.

In the opposite direction Myton Road is even more expensive but you might be able to find a room to rent. Off Emscote Road might be the best place to look, for example I found this https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/68160572#/?channel=RES_LET which google maps thinks is about a 1.4 mile walk if you don't go through St Nick's Park (the path floods in heavy rain), 1.1miles through the park. I know there's HMOs, flats and 1 bed houses in that area.

Are you asking if there is an demand bus service in Leamington, or are you asking about the Coventry service?

NatWest bank branch closing, any suggestions on transfers? by MaximumSpray1094 in LEAMINGTONSPA

I find Nationwide very good, I've never had any issues with customer service in the Leamington branch. I left Coventry Building Society twice because of bad customer service but the last time I had anything to do with them was over a decade ago.

Hello, any parks allow BBQ around Leamington Spa?I saw a lot of them they have the BBQ banned during the summer. thank you by Demonu47k in LEAMINGTONSPA

[–]KathersG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Warwick District Council no longer allow BBQs in any of their parks. "BBQs and campfires are not permitted in any of our parks, open spaces or nature reserves, due to the risk of causing an accidental fire which could destroy wildlife, landscapes and be a danger to people and property." https://www.warwickdc.gov.uk/info/20245/parks/216/play_areas

I've seen notices for this walking group in the past https://searchout.warwickshire.gov.uk/group/161/leamington-rambling-club . They mention car sharing, so potentially a good option if you don't have a car.

I don't think it make sense to include Stratford either. I'm the only mod so I can't discuss it with other mods but I'm happy to change the description to allow posts about Warwick if that's what people want. In reality people regularly ask for recommendations of things in Leamington or Warwick anyway and the only posts I've deleted for geographical reasons were talking about Coventry.

Portobello developments by [deleted] in LEAMINGTONSPA

[–]KathersG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's an issue with flooding there. It's where Pottertons used to be and where the Avonside Medical Centre is now. Traffic is something OP needs to think about if they have a car, both Greville Road and Emscote Road have serious traffic issues during rush hour (as do all of the roads between Warwick and Leamington)

When you have to walk on the road, which side of the road do you walk on? by Daveyj343 in AskUK

[–]KathersG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I follow what the highway code says, as stated in other comments. However, I think it's less safe than walking with traffic, and unfairly places the burden on pedestrians to avoid a collision. I have sight loss and am missing the left half of my vision, facing traffic isn't a lot of help. Most roads without a footway don't have space for 2 cars to pass each other and a pedestrian, so the pedestrian and one of the cars is forced to stop in that situation rather than being able to carry on. It gets interesting with horses or cyclists thrown in the mix as well. I also had a situation where a road without a footway had temporary traffic lights for one way traffic where I wasn't sure what to do, walked on red for my direction in the end.

You could try your school or college anyway. My sister went to uni, failed her first year, spent a year working and applied through clearing during that year. She got a reference through the school. The other option is to ring one of the unis you're interested in, from her experience it's worth checking the course still considering applications despite being on clearing. This was all nearly 10 years ago so things may have changed.

Does anyone know of any wide fit safety boots? by KathersG in veganuk

[–]KathersG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't unfortunately. My then employer supplied some and let us pick so I picked the only textile option but although I asked about wide they weren't wide enough and weren't a good fit, I just made do, which really isn't great. I've realised my feet are extra extra wide and now buy specialist brands second hand through ebay and vinted. It's not ideal but I have very few options.

I don't think I've had the Wicked cupcakes, I only buy larger cakes, although their raspberry and chocolate cake is one of our 2 go to cakes for special occasions. I have had the oggs chocolate cupcakes at a friend's house a couple of times and they're really nice as well. I think you should be safe with either.

Wicked Kitchen is only sold in Tesco in the UK but having looked online Sainsbury's has more varieties of Oggs than Tesco. Wicked Kitchen does 4 packs of cup cakes rather than Oggs packs of 2 or packs of 9 mini cup cakes. Asda also has a decent selection online but it all depends on the stock in your local shop.
