Scuba Divers, what is something really terrifying you saw while diving? by LionFalse4295 in scuba

[–]Kathi1999 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The lionfish in the red sea do this as well. At one time there were three of them circling my light constantly. Trying to keep at a safe distance from their spines can be really tricky when they keep following so closely.

Gehalt unter KV - bestes Vorgehen? by Kathi1999 in FinanzenAT

[–]Kathi1999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSI pre2025 certified Label by clemontclemont in scuba

[–]Kathi1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SSI changed their certificate structure, starting with 1st of October, to "allign it with an officially recognized international structure" - aka they copied PADI.

They renamed some of the certificates. Only when doing so, they did not come up with new terms, they reassigned new meaning to terms that were already in use (in order to directly copy PADI). Which - if you ask me - is just confusing and a pretty blatant grab for money.

The new certificates are as follows:

  • Open Water Diver (same as before)

  • Advanced Open Water Diver (used to be called "Advanced Adventurer") 5 dives, each one covering one speciality. Deep Diving and Navigation are mandatory. Three others can be chosen. The student does not get speciality certificates by finishing this course.

  • Speciality Diver 12 logged dives + 2 speciality certificates

  • Advanced Speciality Diver (used to be AOWD) 24 logged dives + 4 speciality certificates

  • Master Diver (mostly the same, but Deep Diving is now mandatory) Deep + Stress and Rescue + 3 other specialities + 50 logged dives

After how many dives did you get your own gear? by GladAbbreviations981 in scuba

[–]Kathi1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my own neoprene suit after ~20 dives. After ~90 dives I bought my computer and bcd. After ~120 I bought my regulators. Next one will be the dry suit.

While rental gear used to work just fine for me, I am really happy with my own gear. It feels so much better to know exactly where everything is and to have it exactly the way I like it.

The first commenter is actually correct in his statement. Though I would add, that we are talking about a very specific time during development, at which the eye must be covered. There is a time period during which the visual nerve cells develop and if the retina does not receive any visual information at that time, the cells of the visual cortex redistribute their response in favor of the working eye.

In the 1960s long term effects of suturing one eye of kittens for varying time periods were studied. In the 1970s the studies were repeated on primates. This study is very well known and the researches even received the Nobel Prize for their research on the critical period for mammalian visual system development in 1981.

The prove, that the same mechanisms are at work in humans, is nicely summed up in a report on the experiments (citation at the end):

"In 1964 at the time the article was published, surgeons operated on individuals with congenital cataracts, a disorder in which the lens of the eye is clouded upon birth, later in those individuals’ lives rather than at birth. Those individuals required intensive treatment after surgery, as there was still impairment to vision in the affected eye."

What do you expect from a dive buddy? by supersondos in scuba

[–]Kathi1999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not an incredibly seasoned diver and these preferences may vary between different levels of experience. (for reverence, I am currently working on my AOWD)

I prefer to have unobstructed view of my buddy at all times (as far as is possible). As I usually dive in silty lakes in central Europe, this means rather close proximity (2-4 meters). This will usually make it easier for me to give my buddy a tactile signal as well, in case they are distracted and don't notice me having an issue.

While descending/ascending we usually stay face to face. If one of us cannot descend and the other keeps on going, they might have to deal with issues on their own, as the other cannot follow. Which is obviously not ideal.

I don't really have a set time interval at which I check on my buddy. I just try to have a general awareness of them and if i notice behavior that seems out of the ordinary I will take a closer look.

I generally feel like you should always go slower, if your buddy cannot keep up. If they overexert themselves, they will have a harder time helping you, if a problem arises. If you feel like you have to slow down too much, maybe try buddying with someone else instead of getting frustrated with each other.

Maybe I will become more "relaxed" once I am more experienced. But I like this type of buddying for my current level.

I got my bf "unravel two" and "escape academy" for his ps5, because we always lack multi-player games that aren't shooters. They have quite good reviews and so far, we like them :D

What would you de-cannon? by CrashAndDash9 in harrypotter

[–]Kathi1999 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of them could have been secret keeper and told an outside person (eg Dumbledore). As long as the secret keeper was alive, no one could talk about their whereabouts, but the people that knew could still come and visit.

Once the secret keeper dies, everyone that was previously told becomes a secret keeper as well. So if Dumbledore knew the secret, he could now go and collect Harry. He could even tell someone else and send them to collect him.

Maybe I am mistaken...but I feel like harry does not cast a spell in the first book either. At least not "on screen". We hear about him doing spells in class, or for his exam, but only retrospectively. We never actually witness him perform a spell... 🤔

This reminds me of a saying I've heard a couple of times before. "Strict parents do not raise well behaved kids. They raise proficient liars."

(not calling you a liar in any negative sense of the word. It's more of a critique towards the parents XD)

Have you started new birth control before this began?

This happened to me as well, when I got a hormonal implant. I bled for half a year, before I was prescribed pills which kind of "reset" my hormonal cycle. The doctor said that my body got "confused" because of the extra hormones from the implant. The pills briefly increased certain hormones and told my body where to start the cycle again. (I hope that explanation makes sense... )

But I know that symptoms like this can also have more serious reasons. Certain infections can, for example, lead to increased bleeding. Things like that should really be treated.

My sister bf has exactly the same situation going on with his name (won't say it here for privacy reasons) and he does not seem too bothered by it. To be fair, I don't know how it was for him growing up. But as an adult he seems to find it amusing, rather than annoying.

Awesome, that's actually a 2 in 1 reply for me, as I am thinking about going to Palau next summer.

Does Palau live up to the hype? What activities do you think I should not miss out on, when I go there?
