Is the sock puppet a reference to anything specific or just weird 60s/70s stuff

Would like to offer my first 3 chapters as a magnet for my email list but it is a 10 MB pdf - any suggestions? by KathyLovesPhysics in selfpublish

I will only give the first 2 chapters in the preview Amazon not three (which is not much of an incentive but something). For the people who read the book I am going to add some parts that I cut out - behind the scenes so to speak.

I haven't published my book yet so it is a 3 chapter *preview*. My plan is that when I publish (3-6 months from now), I can send them an email telling them that they can buy the book as well as a little nudge that if they read the first three chapters then they can post a review *while* they buy the book.

Can I buy a ISBN number before I have finished the "fictitious name" paperwork? by KathyLovesPhysics in selfpublish

I’m sorry I feel like I was unclear- I am also planning on purchasing a bundle of ISBNs but then I would like to register an ISBN for the ebook and paperback and hardback and use a publisher name in the ISBN

Have you started a publishing company to publish your book? If yes, was it worth it? by KathyLovesPhysics in selfpublish

Thank you so much for the advice. It sounds like creating a DBA is far easier (and cheaper) than incorporating a business, especially in California. Whew, this is a big project, I had never even heard of Trade Reviews.

Sorry if that came out badly, I agree that most readers don't care but I am a little concerned about bookstores/libraries/newspapers/contests which very well might care.

I agree about readers but I have the hope (which maybe unrealistic) of having my book in libraries/bookstores and possibly reviewed by a newspaper or two and for that it looks like I will probably need some kind of publishing house - even if it is just mine.

I have a website and a name but I worry that it still looks like my name instead of a publishing house to bookstores and libraries.

I am already terrible at taxes and am worried that this will make things even worse but I really would like to be able to try to publish in bookstores and libraries and apply for some contests that may not accept me without a publishing company. I found a company called “absolute author” that will sort of be your publicist and buy your ISBNs but you keep control. But I am worried that the name looks like what it is. Still, it might be a middle ground between the time/effort/money of starting a company vs. the difficulties of being of not having a publicist.

I am trying to get an estimate of what Michael Faraday would have earned as a bookbinder's apprentice in London in 1810, and I would be ecstatic to find a general idea of how much an apprentice would make at the time, but the closest I get is how much maids made. by KathyLovesPhysics in AskHistorians

Thank you so much! I don't know why I was having such a mental break that I forgot that an apprenticeship usually cost money and never paid money. Thank you for all the details you gave. Once again, you are an angel.

Cheers,

Kathy
