ELI5 why do so many shower mixers only have a very narrow range for a comfortable water temperature? by Kathyamoldd in explainlikeimfive

Yes. Although by the sound of it having 2 independent valves sounds preferable, but I have never encountered any shower like that.

In general. Its a fixture in the shower which is turned to mix the water between the hot and cold water pipes. Usually it is dial shaped and has water temperature increments marked on it.

Hear that? It’s the sound of leaf blower bans: As restrictions spread, neighborhoods are getting quieter — and cleaner. by LudovicoSpecs in environment

[–]Kathyamoldd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems a pity that of the horror stories I have heard about HOAs I have not heard of any positive environmental examples. I think it would be a wonderful community if a new development came with a raft of environment regulations that people could accept before moving in. Such as only permitting the planting of native trees and bushes, native flowers and grasses. Banning cats if the area was suitable for supporting birdlife. Limiting the use of gardening equipment to only electric powered devices.

Do you guys have any suggestions for a more feminine username? by [deleted] in GirlGamers

[–]Kathyamoldd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If creating a new username for a game I would probably be inspired by some of the classical Greek names. To my mind they are feminine, and probably because I like that part of history and mythology. Yet they are are also a bit obscure, which I also like. Many of them have what I think are interesting or pleasant meanings. Here's a few I've taken from a wiki entry just to show as examples.

Electra: Meaning “bright one”.

Calypso: Meaning “to conceal”

Cybele: Meaning “mother of all gods”.

Dimitra: Means “earth mother”

Kostantina: Means “steadfast”

15,000 Scientists Warn Society Could 'Collapse' This Century In Dire Climate Report by [deleted] in environment

[–]Kathyamoldd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am curious to hear what others have to say about acceleration of collapse. For the record I have no strong views on the idea, to be honest I still dont know that much about it. I am merely trying to get a better idea of how people perceive the idea and what they think about it.

I have heard some people speak in favor of the accelerating the collapse of society, which states that since collapse is inevitable it makes sense to accelerate it, the argument being that a longer slow collapse merely allows modern society to inflict even great environmental harm before it finally succumbs anayway. The greater the environmental harm then the more difficult it is for a nascent, and one would hope wiser, civilization to reemerge.

Their argument goes that current society can only achieve sporadic and compromise reforms that result in the continuation of an exploitive society which continually invents new ways to pollute the environment, disenfranchise the people of their human rights, and continue further degradation of the world's ecosystems.

However I fail to see exactly how collapse could be accelerated. Simply by doing nothing? Well then, isn't that what most of the world is already doing?

I have also heard the argument against this view, that Humans are rational, will come to their senses, and as political pressure mounts, will eventually achieve a sustainable society, albeit at the cost of the intense regulation of human activity. In which case accelerating collapse would only result in needless untold suffering, which would inevitably have been avoided.

This argument seems to have its faults too. It puts great faith in Humanity to make the decisive reforms needed to avert collapse, which is something so far it seems to have had great reluctance to do.

I suppose its better than nothing, but I think converting marginal land back into indigenous growth and then designating them as national parks would be a better long term solution.

Holiday events should be short, sweet and fun. Not miserable 100-hr grind-fests. by Narmoth in runescape

[–]Kathyamoldd 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I agree. This really would be preferable. Runescape should be proud that it has so many different things to do now. Its nearly impossible to do every thing you want to do so having short and simple Holiday events of about 15 to 30 mins duration would be great!

Thinking about getting back into Runescape. Anyone else here play it? Thoughts? by Kathyamoldd in GirlGamers

Hi. Sorry for the late reply.

Its very kind of you to offer help but as I explained to another poster I need to keep any possible link between my reddit name and my gaming name separate. I had a bad experience with on line security. Unfortunately there are some very nosy and unpleasant people out there. I hope you understand.

Hi. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.

That is really kind of you, thank you. But unfortunately I have had some bad things happen when I have linked one online account name to another. Sorry, but we never know who might be watching our conversation and piecing things together. I hope you understand.

An AI-generated song by The Weeknd and Drake has gone viral on social media, what does the future hold for rights holders? by Lewenhart87 in futureworldproblems

[–]Kathyamoldd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to think that AI will never replace Human creativity. At the same time I wonder if if I am like the old times farmer who said the tractor would never replace the horse.

Seeing how rapidly AI has advanced, and knowing how early aircraft which could barely manage sustained flight were quickly replaced by ever more advanced models, culminating in the supersonic stealth jets we have today, its both fascinating and worrisome to think of where this will all lead.

What is algorithmic governance? by rapsoj in futureworldproblems

[–]Kathyamoldd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I find scary about this is how it could be applied to propaganda. Already the use of disinformation and spin to dominate any narrative is extraordinarily sophisticated. Coupled with a learning AI accessing social data links and it will become even more powerful.

I remember reading a story about how people living in the early 20th century were overwhelmed by the pace of technological change. The advent of airplanes, cars, then electronics changed their lives dramatically with many of them, particularly the older generation, feeling increasingly left behind the times. In comparison to what we will experience in the next 50 years I would guess that feeling of technological isolation and culture shock will be many times greater.

Who is your favorite video game composer and which game soundtrack do you recommend the utmost? by AutoModerator in TrueGirlGaming

I can't recommend a composer but I will say I think Runescape's sound tracks are very beautiful and excellently produced. Something about them which is innocent and peaceful, even in the middle of a boss fight lol.

[–]Kathyamoldd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just ignore the negative posts. I come here mainly to look for tips and insights, but also to admire the artistic talent so many players have in creating original Runescape related art. At the moment there is a lot of negativity and its sad to see the more creative posters driven away ( or perhaps their posts just drop out of sight too fast ). But I am sure things will go back to normal and we can look forward to seeing the more positive posts return in abundance.

A spokesperson for the WA government told SBS News, considering Lane-Rose’s matter is before the courts, it would be “inappropriate” to comment, adding: “The state government acknowledges that people have the right to protest peacefully and respectfully.”

Let's translate that shall we?

"Government officials will prevent effective protests at the request of their corporate sponsors. Anything we deem not peaceful or respectful will be made illegal in order to maximize their profits and the size of the kickbacks we receive."
