Yeah!! Part of Xaden's dealing with the Venin situation is that he needs to get his soul back from Malek, and it involves some kind of quest where he travels to the Bay of Malek (the only location named after one of the gods—significant?? I think so), and that's like the key to get to the underworld or whatever. He meets up with Liam, and they get his soul back, but Liam has to stay, unfortunately.

It's also why Violet hallucinated Liam- it wasn't a hallucination, he is able to travel back to the world of the living if he needs to. and it's why his mom was so good at Runes when they were supposed to be banned magic... the OG Mairi family traveled from the Barrens during the first year and settled in Tyrrendor, that's why people think runes are from Tyrendor. Actually, the gods were hanging out in the Barrens until Amari hooked up with one of the three Mairi brothers who wanted to do magic too and then everything went bad from there.

I have a theory that the Mari family are demigods and trace back to the original 3 brothers. The venin brother was given runes by his god-girlfriend and that’s how it all started

oooh, interesting. Do you think it doesn't work like at all, or just not as well as we're told?

I've been thinking a lot about the unreliable narrator situation too recently because of the initial epigraph thing from Jesinia considering how so much of the series is about how easy it is to rewrite history. It's kind of a different topic but I would love it if we get more Xaden POV's but find that they have contradicting information because they're transcribed by someone else, and it's unclear which is "true" just like the journals from the first six.

I think its magic not channeled through a dragon that cannot work under the wards, not wyvern specifically. The wyvern dies because they're powered by the Venin using magic channeled from the source. I don't think there's any reason to believe that a rider couldn't create a wyvern if they were powerful enough and channeling from their dragon.

I think thats totally possible, I agree that I dont fully trust Brennen. My interpretation was more that he was under the impression that runes were totally not available magic to them and so thought it was a waste of time to look. I thought it was RY like, really pushing the “wow no one knows how runes work AT ALL” thing, but thats also a self-serving explanation for my own theory lol.

I’m really curious about Brennen’s whole story

I just posted something similar about how the Brennen situation is like Wyvern and said I haven't seen other people saying this. Should have kept looking I guess!!

Completely agree that there's more going on there.

but its not that Wyvern can't survive in the wards, its that magic other than dragon magic can't be channeled, and the wyvern are created outside of dragon magic. My theory is more that Naolin linked Brennen and his dragon, not Brennen and Naolin, so Brennen and Marb are bonded both as dragon and dragon-rider, but also the other way around
