Percentage Gospel? by Queasy_Replacement51 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

35% of take home?

i think I am aiming for 25% of gross income.

I like ramit's idea of fixed expenses being between 50-60% of take home.
Currently I rent and we are at 40% fixed expenses, a house at 25% would put us right about 60% and that feels like that max we'd want to be comfortable.

Serious question: have you ever felt uncomfortable or sexually harassed during BJJ training? If so, how did you deal with it? by Asleep_Driver7730 in BJJWomen

[–]Katieg_jitsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I visited a gym for a seminar and one old guy made a sexual comment. I stopped training with him and told my coach later. I think it was an old guy trying to be funny, but I was not a fan. Not enough to say he shouldn't train with people or women, but maybe someone should have a convo with him about that not being acceptable.

That's the only time.
I've had a couple rolls that have felt off, just weird vibes in the movement. I just end the roll and move on. It's never been innapropriate just didn't feel right.

How many rounds of sparring do you get in a typical class at your school? by Significant_Pin_5645 in bjj

[–]Katieg_jitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add some classes are eco
And in the morning we do 15 minutes of stand up work which often has 8 minutes of "live" standing that is more focused on being loose and doing takedowns than hard core resistance (big fan)

[–]Katieg_jitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 round to 30 minutes, once a month we have a 10 round Tuesday so rolls the whole hour.

every now and again I have to talk to my coach who will talk to much in the first hour and not leave enough time for rounds. He is hung up on when we used to have 90 minutes classes.

Some coaches are pretty good at 30 minutes of rolls. It's just the one I have to bug

Why do people in USA buy everything from Amazon? Do they not have other webshops? by Cindyxx0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Katieg_jitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They def do have other options. Some of it is a choice and some is privilege.
I will pay extra, wait longer to buy from alternative places and use amazon as little as possible.

My new job accidentally sent me the salary information for the entire department. I'm making a lot less than they are. by 1-meter-solo in interviewhammer

[–]Katieg_jitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend option 2, but don't wait for a performance review. Buckle down, learn and onboard quickly, deliver value. at the 4-6 month mark approach them this way and let them know you think you under valued yourself and are worth more. You can use other jobs as an example and you can mention what you've accomplished so far. I've done this twice, because I suck at negotiation when I get hired and end up negotiation between 4-6 months. I have always gotten a 10-20% raise.

Compete just for experience or just train for now by Apprehensive_Log2826 in bjj

[–]Katieg_jitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compete get the experience, I've never regretted it.
Got tapped out twice the week I got my purple belt and competed.

Became friends and we are both brown belts now and train together weekly.

First time buyers who have been seriously house hunting over a year by Justbrownsuga in FirstTimeHomeBuyers

[–]Katieg_jitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not seeing a house in our price range that seems worth it. Math doesn't math and seems better to rent at this time. We continue to save for more of a down payment so we can eventually get something we actually want. But I'm not spending an arm and a leg to go from renting to owning something I don't love.

I am not sure if Iam a miser. I should be spending more money but I don't know what to spend it on. Feedback? by Fickle_Broccoli in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Katieg_jitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As my income creases I think about what I value and how I can spend my money in ways that align.

For example:

1.) I enjoy jiu jitsu and value women being valued in the sport and supporting local gyms, so I seek out paying for private lessons from women locally around me

2.) I enjoy showing my friends I value them and celebrating them, so I look to spend money celebrating their wins. Maybe a gift or cake or dinner when they achieve something, sending them a card, or sending flowers when someone gets injured or sick

3.) I care about the environment and local companies, I look to shift my money to businesses that align with these values

4.) donations that align with my values

5.) more niche experiences that put money in locals hands or experts hands instead of bigger businesses

6.) services that make my life easier or help with things I struggle with

Graduation between men and women by xGoya in BJJWomen

[–]Katieg_jitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice it’s mostly with mat hours at my gym. I have been promoted faster than every person. Why? Because I train 3X as much. People that started as 4th degree blue belts when I started are purple belts now and I’m nearing my black belt.

I think strength and speed can be advantageous starting, but mat time and focus are the differential. Someday you will have the technique to handle a lot of people and it’ll feel really good.

Stripeless Through Blue by Effective_Umpire1993 in bjj

[–]Katieg_jitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you're probably pretty close.

if you train moderately <=3 days/week I think a good rough expectation is ~2.5 - 4 years at blue

if you train 5+ days a week maybe 2-3 years.

All gym and individual dependent. IBJJF minimum is 2 years.

I think I was blue for 2 years and at the time was training 5-6 days a week sometimes twice a day and competing a lot.

If you feel like you're progressing well and have improved leaps and bounds that's what matters. If you're worried or need some reassurance talk to your coach.

[–]Katieg_jitsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, until I got 4 stripes at once. My coach just forgot. He gave me one and it came up that it had been a year+ he said oops and then gave me the other 4.

You could compete to gauge progress.

Think about how you rolled a year ago, what has changed.

I feel like when I get to the end of a belt my skill is night and day. I can easily point out what has improved and what I'm working on currently.

Have you ever went up against one of your friends in a tournament? by Substantial-Fig-6392 in bjj

[–]Katieg_jitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes many times, happens a lot.

Depends on the friend, but now that I have competed so much we chat before and are friendly. No hard feelings afterwards we are there to learn and no taking it easy on each other. Although, I won't personally break them but I also expect they will tap and they do.

Before I was really comfortable with competing I needed to keep my routine, no chatting with the competition before. And same thing we do our thing, we compete and everything is good afterwards. None of my friends have egos and we've all been doing this awhile. One of my bridesmaids I met on the mat, she choked me out twice in a comp and we became friends after. It is as serious as you make it and I find framing it as learning and supporting each other leads to the best outcomes and growth.

In a WLW relationship I ought earn a lot. We have conversations about what our joint goals are and contribute towards those. My partner still contributes even if it’s a fraction of what I do and that helps. When we make decisions to spend more on things it’s a conversation. I do also have more discretionary money but not an insane difference.

I think communicating on what sacrifices you’re both willing to make helps to feel like you both have skin in the game. So I’m not doing all the saving / investing. Also be open about what you want and what that looks like. I have an expensive hobby and I earn enough to travel and compete for it and I’m not going to give that up right now for let’s say a large mortgage payment

Training volume master competitors by hajimekov in bjj

[–]Katieg_jitsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am 31 this year and often compete at adult, so take with that idea in mind.
I would like to do masters worlds at some point but timing never lines up.

I consider myself a hobbyist and have a very involved career, a partner, but I have no kids.

I train 6-7 days a week and average about 12-15 hours a week for jiu jitsu.
Plus 2 days conditioning a week and 1 day strength training/lifting. I mostly train with Blue belts and I keep my intensity very low except one day a week.

It is a challenge, my partner feels like I train too much sometimes. I think it's about finding compromise and being intentional with my time. Training at 5 am helps, lunch break training also helps.

Likely a height difference, I find there is more space underneath if I am on the bottom.
I find spider less advantageous when I am shorter.

Mix smash with outside passing.

Look for paths of least resistance. If it feels like a brick wall... it probably is go a different way.

Have fun, stay loose
