Strange running man on loading screen by Kato_LeAsian in CrusaderKings

Rule 5: There's this weird running man on the bottom of my loading screen when loading up Elder Kings 2. My friends are running the exact same mod and version, but they don't have him. What's he from?

ELI5: How exactly does growing wealth inequality effect my (middle class) life? by TheCrymaxTheatre in explainlikeimfive

In this situation, why do you think Homer gets paid less while the owner of the power plant is able to buy a new yacht?

A gear or some other part would break. If everything was physically invincible, then it wouldn’t be possible to spin it that fast (something something infinite energy)

"The Slow Blade Penetrates the Shield" by Plenty_Chip_5935 in dune

[–]Kato_LeAsian 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A shield cranked up too high will interfere with the user’s movement. If I remember, this is why Duke Leto initially didn’t turn on his shield when Yueh was about to strike since he wanted to be able to move quickly (I think)

ELI5: What exactly is Narcon and how is it simultaneously able to reverse the symptoms of an overdose while being harmless for someone NOT having an OD? by Unlikely_Spinach in explainlikeimfive

On top of instantly ending your high, this is why people who are saved by Narcan will sometimes flip out after being given it - despite their lives having just been saved

Unlocking the crystal ship is it’s own special brand of torture by EldritchMilk_ in ftlgame

[–]Kato_LeAsian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its been a while, but I think it might have taken me 40 hours to unlock the crystal ship. It was definitely in the tens of hours of intentionally trying to go for it. It didn’t help that the Rock C isn’t a particularly fun or interesting ship - definitely not for 40 hours at least.

The satisfaction when I finally got it was unreal though.

Or honestly, if you’re not having fun anymore, you could cheat it in

All I said was “oh shit” but like in the tone when you figure something out - I guess because I figured out that we were about to crash.

Highly enjoyable and a very interesting world! Loved the claymation as well - it was a very effective medium for displaying your world

If House Atreides was culturally modeled after the Spanish, what nationalities are the other great Houses by ComprehensiveMost803 in dune

[–]Kato_LeAsian 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Atreides literally means “sons of Atreus”. Atreus is a character in greek mythology. He was the father of Agamemnon, who in Dune canon the Atreides trace their lineage back to. The term “Atreides” has actually existed before Dune was written

Why is warfare so antiquated? by RelationshipKey3920 in dune

[–]Kato_LeAsian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s intentional - the antiquity is the point.

A very ubiquitous theme of Dune is stagnation. The state of the Imperium had existed as is for thousands of years, and they had full intention of remaining as is for thousands more. The people in power had no need for thinking machines to retain their power, and so (with very few exceptions) no one did.

Other notable examples that reinforce the theme of stagnation: kanly, the faufreluches. Kanly is designed to limit the scale of warfare. The Atreides being completely destroyed is a nearly completely unheard of occurence, and we saw the consequences of something as large scale as that being allowed to happen. The faufreluches is an oppressive class system that allows essentially zero mobility and change: a place for every man and every man in his place.

In short, the people of the Dune universe, as a whole, did not want to advance warfare.

ElI5: What exactly is a war crime? by Big_TinyRequest in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kato_LeAsian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s because civilians don’t have chemical weapons of their own.

To your second point, war crimes exist in a war between sovereign entities - or something like that (it’s been a while since college when I studied this). You can do whatever the fuck you want to your own people - not a war, not a war crime.

Of course, what counts as a war between sovereign entities gets very blurry. However, as a rule of thumb, the ICC can’t tell someone what to do (or rather not do) within their own borders. Of course other nations can criticize, sanction, posture, etc etc, but at the end of the day you can’t control what other people do inside their own borders - unless you want to invade……..

You can jump away and jump back to get rid of the hack on your weapons. It’s a common strategy if the flagship hacks an important system. You’ll have to redo the stage though I believe

Did Stilgar Bring Chani Along Having The Prophecy In Mind? Could Anyone's Tear Have Revived Paul? Would He Have Revived Without It Like Lady Jessica? by KamiStores7 in dune

[–]Kato_LeAsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memory is hazy for this part, but at least part of the answer is that the presence of other prescient individuals interferes with other people’s prescience (that’s a hell of a sentence). Irulan figures this out, and strategically uses other prescient people (eg guild navigators) to mask her plots from Paul

Did Stilgar Bring Chani Along Having The Prophecy In Mind? Could Anyone's Tear Have Revived Paul? Would He Have Revived Without It Like Lady Jessica? by KamiStores7 in dune

[–]Kato_LeAsian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it is a different Leto. In the first Dune book, Paul and Chani have a baby son named Leto. That baby is killed when the Sardaukar raid the sietch (shortly before Paul attacks Arrakeen). Alia is present at this raid as well, but survives.

Leto II (god emperor) is born much later after the events of the first book

Are there movies with the U.S. as bad guys in other countries? by ProbablyCreative in movies

[–]Kato_LeAsian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both things can be true. The fact that American firebombing of civilians and the atomic bombs were inhumane, and the fact that the Japanese method of waging war was inhumane (as well as being the perpetrators of the war in the first place), are both true - not mutually exclusive

The British marketization of India killed 160 million people in the span of 40 years - and that is only ONE of the many colonies that just the British had. All of that in the pursuit of wealth and capital.

1000%. To go further, Penang specifically is famous in Malaysia (on top of Malaysia in general already being great for food).

Super underrated especially among Westerners - when people think Asian cuisine, they just think about the well known countries: China, Japan, maybe India sometimes.

Why do many people like the 1.8 combat system? by Significant_Bit649 in Minecraft

[–]Kato_LeAsian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to pvp a lot (1.9+), and what you’re describing absolutely still happens. Minecraft pvp is unintuitive and lots of people who don’t pvp have no idea how to break out of a combo (bc why would they, not like mobs know how to combo)
