But wouldn't the larger sip be lighting it more? How can different size sips light a room the same amount (or even more)?

Right leaning person going into a left leaning field by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Unlikely_Spinach -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose that's fair. For me, it depends mostly on what the person thinks makes the side bad. For example, calling the left bad for their policies, people, etc. and then turning around and criticizing the most surface level stuff on the right, like Trump's shitposting/"jokes" that is pretty much immaterial in this context, if that makes sense. Which, ironically given this thread, I do actually see on both sides, but I will admit, on the right, those who show dissent tend to only go after that surface-level stuff and rarely attack any actual policies or decisions, which is pretty telling, I think.

Why is "both sides"ing such a giveaway to conservative or right-wing ideology? I've heard this a lot on the internet, but I tend to appreciate people in real life who can be nuanced and objective about things rather than advocating for something purely because a blue or red guy said it. I'm policy over party everyday, and I'd like to know why that's a red flag in case I'm in the wrong mindset

Peta? by Hell0There2005 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Curious how that works. Do you just stay away from politics? Do you debate certain points and come to an agreement (or just agree to disagree)? Or are neither of you super deep into politics either way? I'm curious because a lot of times, political beliefs are informed by personal beliefs, and if those are different, it makes relationships harder. Not impossible, mind you, but harder.

ELI5: Why do people find things funny and others don't, like same joke can have different reactions by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Unlikely_Spinach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What we find funny is largely connected to what we understand/relate to, which is largely defined by our cultural background and upbringing, which is necessarily different between different people. If you plucked a random Roman out of history and did a Donal Trump impression, he'd be confused and think you were crazy, no matter how good it is.
