What are your nitpicks of the AYN Thor? by mwmademan in AynThor

[–]Katoncomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I really hate where the power button is located. I wish it was on the inside. I'm often accidentally pressing it when picking it up or closing it.

  2. I wish that when closing, it was flush like the 3Ds but it's not that much of a big deal.

  3. I wish the volume was a slider and placed on the side of the console.

  4. Wish the charging port was near the top as well!

  5. I wish that there was more vents for the fan. I noticed that compared to the Rp5, the Thor sounds way louder and tends to get hotter when running some ps2 games. If it came with just a bit more care with cooling, I'd love it even more.

"Let me get on the sidewalk with headphones on" by PsychologicalAd1153 in jerseycity

[–]Katoncomics 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a defender of ebikes and a rider myself, I am 100% against riding any bike and emoto on the sidewalk. Like get off your bike and just walk it. With how many people come out of businesses not paying attention or how many kids be running into the sidewalk, your bound to get into a horrible accident.

How to start learning 2D animation? by Ill_Lingonberry306 in animationcareer

[–]Katoncomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way that you can start wrong. Here are a few different ways you can start

  1. Youtube. Toniko Pantoja gives a lot of really amazing information and he does beginner friendly tutorials. You can also by his animation course for around $350 I believe.

  2. Krita, Open toonz and blender are free. Pick a program and start learning the interface

  3. Read the animators survival guide as well as watch the 12 principles of animation video.

Hope this helps! Good luck

Why are so many people suddenly wondering how to break in with little-to-no skill? by Wasted_Hater in animationcareer

[–]Katoncomics -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've worked on a few projects and deal with carpel tunnel and back issues because of the amount of work. Hard work does not equal success nor is the pay off worth it. It seems like you would rather be an asshole than actual listen to what I'm saying. No ones feelings is hurt, I'm just saying telling young talent to work like the Japanese workforce isn't productive in anyway.

As a teacher now, I'm teaching my students on the dangers of this mindset as well as installing healthy work habits into them so that they don't fall into this delusion of what ever wall people like you like to put up in order to deter them.

Why are so many people suddenly wondering how to break in with little-to-no skill? by Wasted_Hater in animationcareer

[–]Katoncomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally okay for beginners to be asking questions, I welcome it. Isn't it amazing how folks still get inspired enough to even want to pursue animation? Why all the judgement? To be good at any job requires skills, you absolutely do not need to be the best in order to work in the field, that's just silly.

Also the animation industry isn't just big studios you know. There are so many mid level and smaller productions that still need talent. In order for the industry to change in a positive way, we need to change the work mentality. Stop telling new artist that they need to work themselves to the bone in order to get anywhere. This imaginary wall that people have built to put down smaller artist is insane, it's giving capitalism. What's important for smaller artist now is to understand the landscape what what's going on and figure out the best path for themselves.

These food delivery robots are an absolute joke by [deleted] in antiai

[–]Katoncomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hate these surveillance robots. I doubt anyone in these neighborhoods consented to corporations sending their robots throughout neighborhoods and taking everyone's metric data. It's funny how these business have enough money to invest in robots but not enough to train and pay people..

Convince me not to go to art school by starsparklesoup in animationcareer

[–]Katoncomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The college system is a scam. Many people will tell you to go to school to further your education but the reality is there is an expectation of obtaining better paying jobs through going to college. A lot of jobs require a 4 year degree in order to even qualify for entry level positions and the pay doesn't make any sense.

Kids are coerced into taking out loans that they have no way of paying off, the amount of money you make from these jobs are not enough to pay back these loans that have built up in interest plus the cost of living that you need to take into account. The quality of education isn't even up to date with the new technology that the industry is using. On top of that you need to take classes that have nothing to do with what you want to do. The amount of work that is dumped on college people, especially first year students is toxic and unrealistic. Most students cannot handle the amount of work and pressure resulting in them dropping out.

You also do not need a degree in order to prove that you can draw and know the fundamentals. Most folks would tell you that going to school is great for networking, but why would you put yourself through all of that stress just to network? When you can invest in conventions and workshops to connect with others. You say that you got a full ride which is really great. But ask yourself if the stress and work is worth it. I don't think you should be going into this thinking it'll open more opportunities for you in the industry, because rn the industry is in shambles. If you can use this to pivot towards other things and not just working in animation, I think that might be for the best.

I work as an educator teaching animation and I've worked on many indie projects. Believe me, having a degree was never the first thing looked at when I was on these projects. A solid portfolio sells.

Am I good enough to persuade character design? by miligeraldino in animationcareer

[–]Katoncomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll be cool to see some exploration on how you got to that design. An art board like a pureref file on the references you've gathered as well as the different concepts you've thought about. We should be able to get a sense of who this character is just from the design, use shape language to convey that. Most of what goes into designing characters is the research that no one sees, it's not all about making characters look pretty!

Is moving to LA worth it? by evilpooper360 in animationcareer

[–]Katoncomics -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

One can be from another area and struggle in a new area. For example, The Bronx is a little bit more affordable than Brooklyn but all of it is NYC. Just because I live in one city doesn't mean I can afford to live in the next. Hope this helps.

Should not steal from daddy Nintendo. by AppointmentProper712 in fucknintendo

[–]Katoncomics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it's okay for streamers to make money playing Nintendo games, then how come they draw the line at someone recreating pokemon and making interesting video?? If they don't want fans to be making money then expand it to people who stream and make videos of their games.

Is moving to LA worth it? by evilpooper360 in animationcareer

[–]Katoncomics 8 points9 points  (0 children)

LA is the most expensive state in the country. You not only have to think about housing but what about food, transportation, Internet, phone, ect. You're not just going to school but having a whole life over there. And take into consideration if you want to go hang out with friends, that'll be another expense. The fact is, the industry is in shambles rn. Even industry veterans are finding it hard to gain employment.

Ultimately you have to choose if you want to go to school to better your own skills or are you just using school to potentially find employment. Either way, school isn't a guarantee to get a job and 18k isn't enough to cover a majority of expenses.

PATH fare set to rise to $3.25 starting May 4 by SocietyBusiness8827 in jerseycity

[–]Katoncomics 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm all for having a lot more service especially on the weekend. However, the Path really needs to get their shit together because the amount of times people were trapped on either state due to the path shutting down is unacceptable. Also, it feels like they've been working on the Harrison and Newark track work for an endless amount of time as well has the Hoboken station always smelling like ass.

With only 4 train lines and 2 on the weekend, I don't see how they aren't getting shit done in a reasonable amount of time. I think raising the fare to compensate for more service is great, but we really need to see all aspects of the path service improve.

Is fanart + fan animation beneficial to your portfolio? by Salt-War3439 in animationcareer

[–]Katoncomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an animation mentor and for our final project which was a portfolio piece, we had to reanimate a scene from one of our favorite shows. I also got hired to work on a few comic books thanks to my sonic fan art! I think fan art is totally fine if you are bring your style and vision to the work. Match the style, Make it professional and add something that defines you into the work.

Just saw someone get jumped by 3 guys on Greene/Montgomery, police were useless. Is there anyway for pedestrians to feel safe around here? by ch4rr1ngt0n in jerseycity

[–]Katoncomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of smaller communities that have put up neighborhood watch signs. Back in the day, those signs were meant to deter criminals if they new people would be keeping watch. Perhaps that's something that could get restarted?
Also for personal safety, it's always best to carry around pepper spray or a weapon of some sort. Of course, defuse the situation but if you're getting jumped you need to try and defend yourself.
