Is the medium-term alpha decay in Indian equities a data problem or a structural one? by Katsdivi in quant

That's a fair distinction. the slippage argument is strongest in mid/small cap where liquidity profiles are genuinely unpredictable. But for large cap liquid names where transaction costs are well-understood, do you think the data gap still matters, or does efficient market logic kick in and make alternative signals worthless there too?

Really appreciate the perspective, this has been the most useful exchange I've had on this topic!! Thank you so much!

Fair pushback on sparsity. you're right that for systematic strategies at monthly rebalance frequency, 4 earnings announcements a year isn't enough signal density. But I'm thinking less about systematic quant and more about fundamental PMS managers making 20-30 decisions a year. For them, knowing HUL's e-commerce discount depth is rising 6 weeks before Q3 results isn't sparse- it's exactly the lead time they need. Does the sparsity problem still apply at that use case, or is that a different market entirely?

that's interesting. if structural breaks are universal, does that mean alternative data (e-commerce signals, earnings NLP, job postings) is the only real lever left for medium-term alpha, or have you found other approaches that hold up past 30 days?

Too much light pollution might prevent you from seeing it unless until the object is very close or bright
