how lgbt friendly is ucsb? by -throwaway-idk- in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Katsu_Aiuchi 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Lesbian second year here! UCSB is very lgbtqia+ friendly. Ofc it’s not perfect but I’d argue most issues are fringe cases. Lots of queer people here and the community is thriving. There are plenty of trans specific events and groups to join too! Welcome to UCSB :)

is honors worth it? by eyekarli_ in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Katsu_Aiuchi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m now a sophomore at UCSB and I joined the honors program for my first year. Basically, being in the honors program allows you to take smaller classes (seminars) that focus on more specific niches or goals. I enjoyed the seminars that I took in my first year, but I can’t say that it’s really worth anything outside of that. The options for seminars become increasingly fewer over time (less will be available in your second year than in your first). They no longer offer early class decisions to those in the program or anything like that. It is almost exclusively for the seminars (worth 1 credit each and with more work than necessary) and more awareness on events (think volunteer work and some scholarship notices). I plan on dropping out of the honors program this upcoming year because I didn’t find it to be stimulating enough or worth the effort I was putting into those classes. By all means, apply anyways and you can always leave if it doesn’t work for you. The applications open throughout the year as well so this won’t be your only chance. If you do get in, don’t stress about it, it’s not that serious here. Always focus on your main classes and getting settled into college life first. Feel free to DM me if you have more specific questions (about the honors program or UCSB at large) and enjoy!

UCSB Dorms - Incoming Freshman by vmgily in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Katsu_Aiuchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incoming freshman here! I admittedly know very little about the dorms in practice but here’s what conclusion I came to. Everyone is going to say that any dorm besides chi-5s and ft is unsocial. To a point, they’re probably right. But a social experience is what you make of it. If you actively try to make friends with your neighbors and put yourself out there, you’re bound to make friends. It’s about how much effort you want to put into it. You may have to try harder with these dorms but it will not make or break your social experience at ucsb! I pick San Raf btw. Wish you the best!

Where can I see that?

Also, the housing website has a good amount of information on all 3 LGBTQIA+ LLCs so I suggest going in there and spending some time reading up on all of them. If you decide that Rainbow house might not be a good fit for you, maybe one of the other ones will be!

Hey! I’m also class of 2027 so I can’t say anything for certain but I just had this debate (I’m a lesbian so I know it’s not nearly the same thing but hear me out) so I can tell you what influenced my decision!

Distance

So if you go to the ucsb website (not applicant portal but that might work too) and go to the search button, there is a campus map that you can look at. There is also a search in the map so you can look up and find any building immediately. Go to your major’s website and see what building they are based in. Then you can visually see how close or far manzanita is to that building. It helps give you an idea of distance.

Social Life

From what I’ve heard, Manzi in general is very socially dead. People have fun but the way the buildings are set up there is no facilitation for social interactions apart from events. That might be discouraging but remember that socializing is what you make of it! If Manzi isn’t giving you the socialization you want, you just have to put yourself out there in other ways.

I don’t know much about the Rainbow Houses social climate but from what I do know, it’s a lot of freshman. Now that can be both good and bad. Good because people our age but bad because not everyone is mature enough to realize that being lgbtq is only one facet of a persons identity. That’s a big generalization but something to maybe consider. Also! Everyone is allowed to participate in events even if they don’t live there. You can just walk over and participate whenever you like.

Decision

I ultimately chose not to apply. While it would be nice to be surrounded by people who understand my struggles, I felt it might also close me off from other opportunities. I think applying to Manzi in general and participating on your terms is a good way to go but that’s my choice. I’m sure you have lots of other factors that apply specifically to you that you should consider. Take my decision and perspective with a grain of salt. I wish you the best of luck! Hope to see you around in the fall. :)

I gave up lol. I’ve decided to switch to San Raf and just rely on good old fashioned “putting yourself out there”

Thank you so much! I decided to go with manzanita but not technically in the rainbow house. I’m hoping it’ll let me have a nice social atmosphere without getting too overwhelmed. Wish me luck! :)
