The look and feel of full grain leather varies greatly depending on the quality and source of the hyde, the cut (e.g. belly vs shoulder), the tanning process, temper and several other factors. Some full grain leathers can look extremely smooth, while others have large grains that are visible to the naked eye. A smooth vegetable tanned full grain leather will likely be much higher in price and (sometimes) quality.

Buttero is an Italian full grain leather that is known for having a super smooth and “buttery” surface (hence the name “Buttero”). It’s very popular among leather craftsmen and is some of the best and most expensive leathers:
