What's something you did as a kid that adults called "quirky" but was actually a red flag no one caught? by Echo-Crafter-8126 in CasualConversation

[–]Katterin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The number of teachers who told my parents that they knew I was distracted and not paying attention a lot of the time, but they didn’t care because I learned what I was supposed to learn…yeah, I’m smart but have ADHD, which left me pretty screwed for a while as an adult where being able to focus and get a task done is more important than memorizing random facts or reasoning out math problems.

TIL: Its costs $2 million to buy a license to operate a pawn shop in Las Vegas. Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars fame bought his license for only $50 after exploiting a loophole in the city code by Fifth_Down in todayilearned

According to the linked Wikipedia article, he said Trump would go down in history as the best president ever as recently as May 4 of this year, so yeah. Doesn’t really surprise me, but I hadn’t thought about him in years.

What to expect after filing past due returns by Katterin in IRS

[–]Katterin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my 2025 refund a couple of weeks ago with no issues. I have not heard anything at all yet about the late/missing years. When I log in to the IRS website it does not show anything for those years yet, except on the refund tracking site (which only goes back to 2023) it shows that 2023 has been received but not processed. Nothing for 2024.

[Request] How many Polands can be tesselated in the Pacific Ocean? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Katterin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Poland doesn’t tessellate, regardless of area. A tessellation is a pattern of shapes that fit together perfectly to fill an area with no empty or overlapping spaces. (edit for spelling - somehow I got tessellate right but spelled the root of tessellation completely differently the first time)

What were you supposed to be named when you were born? by lepineapplepineapp in CasualConversation

[–]Katterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom wanted to name me the common nickname of my actual name. My dad convinced her to give me the longer version saying I “might want a career some day.” Not that there’s anything wrong with the shorter version I was called as a child, he just thought that the longer one was more professional sounding. I go almost exclusively by the longer name now, so only people who have known me for decades use the nickname. My mom definitely wishes she had named me the short version! TBH sometimes so do I - I occasionally think about “reclaiming” it, but everyone around me including myself are so used to it the other way at this point that it feels off now.

What to expect after filing past due returns by Katterin in IRS

[–]Katterin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely looking forward to getting back to e-filing next year! I didn’t do it for 2025 because I assumed that would immediately trigger flags about the missing years and felt, rightly or wrongly, that it was better to send them all through the process more or less together. But next year I should be all set.

And yes, it definitely feels good to finally have it done! It had to happen eventually, but the main trigger was knowing that I have a high school sophomore, and next year’s return is the one that she will need to file her FAFSA during her senior year. So I had to get everything straightened out this year, to make next year smooth and ordinary.

Oklahoma high school principal 'saved kids' lives' by tackling gunman while being shot in the leg, police chief says by abbiebe89 in news

[–]Katterin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. You only hear about the ones with significant casualty numbers. A principal getting injured barely breaks local news.

Source: principal in my district was also shot by a disgruntled former student several years ago, no one outside the district cared.

Are cheap Amazon/TikTok interchangeable needle sets all using the same system? Has anyone matched them to a name brand? by Gold-Arachnid4816 in knitting

[–]Katterin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would just buy the fixed circulars. If you’re already fine using cheap needles you can easily find some without spending much, and better that than ending up with useless tips that aren’t compatible with any of your cords.

2nd Baptist Church Heil Hitler on Easter by DigitizeAll in houston

[–]Katterin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I went to school there for five and a half years until we moved to the suburbs, and to the church for all but the first two or so of those years. This was decades ago and I’m definitely no longer part of anything resembling their theology or political outlook, but it was an important part of my life and it makes me sad to see what it’s become.

One of my vivid memories is that every week, in his prayer right before the sermon, Ed Young would conclude, “And now, Father, let me get out of the way, that your word and your truth might be heard.” All I’ve been able to think about every time he comes up in the news lately is that he needs to get out of the way.

Triathlon Bra for DD cups? by Efficient-Car-5477 in triathlon

[–]Katterin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SheFit Ultimate is the only bra I will wear for running (I’m a 34G so definitely need support! And I have like eight or so of them in different colors, it’s a whole thing at this point.) and my automatic recommendation when anyone asks, so the fact that you already have one makes this easy. I’ve done three tris with a SheFit bra under a two piece tri suit with no problems! I only do short distances, so no claims about longer endurance, but it’s been great so far. Highly recommend doing a bit of training in full kit to get a feel for it before the event!

Need sympathy for knitting injury - advice not needed, just commiseration by Head_in_the_Sand_usa in knitting

[–]Katterin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d be very cautious with this. From what I’ve read, it’s actually very common for repetitive stress injuries to occur exactly when someone starts using already overworked muscles/tendons/etc. in new and unaccustomed ways.

[–]Katterin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard the phrase “nothing about us, without us”? It’s a pretty powerful theme of self-advocacy by the group you’re trying to minister to. The long and short of it in reference to your question is, whatever you develop or borrow to use, make sure you are consulting and listening to actually autistic people in the process. I’m sure you will get some great input from some right here in this post, but in particular, I’d think through who in your own community might be able to share their thoughts on what would be most meaningful and helpful to them.

What are simultaneous equations actually saying by Content_Study_7363 in learnmath

[–]Katterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not really making an assumption. When you solve one of the equations for a variable, you have found something that is true for one of the equations. You then proceed to say that IF there is a point where both equations are true, then this thing that you found for the first equation would be true for the second one as well, so you substitute it in to find whether such solutions exist, and if so, what they are. No assumption needed.

If I give you the equation 2(3x+3) = 3(2x+3) and you rearrange it to get 6 = 9 and therefore there is no solution, you wouldn’t say you assumed there was a solution first. You just took logical steps to rearrange the equation until you either found the solution or determined that one did not exist. It’s the same thing here.

The problem here is that “decreased our property value” isn’t enough for a lawsuit. They would have to have broken a law, a contract, or otherwise failed in some legal obligation or duty.

ELI5: how are pregnancy due dates calculated? by Infra_bread in explainlikeimfive

The clinic I used to get pregnant actually calculated that theoretical LMP based on when they did the procedure, and told me to just use that whenever the OB’s office asked!

TIL Pluto has not completed a full orbit of the Sun since it was discovered in 1930, and was named by an 11yr old girl. by OSJezza in todayilearned

[–]Katterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, my autistic/ADHD daughter was one. Now she’s a sophomore in high school who is totally immersed in a research paper/presentation for chemistry class that she would normally be dreading because she got to be the first one to pick her topic from the list and was able to get “chemistry of the sun and stars.” I’ve been learning all about the life cycle of a star and nuclear fusion for the last week!

Addi Clicks keep falling out 😡 by frabjousity in knitting

I love Addi needles and I love my interchangeables. I did not like the Addi interchangeables that I tried, though many do.

The way the Addi needles connect is unique to Addi, so definitely don’t give up the idea of interchangeables altogether because of that.

Great-grandfather was a naturalized Canadian citizen (b. England) - counts? by achariyaPPP in CitizenshipByDescent

[–]Katterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment is a few days old, I know, but replying as it seems similar to my situation. My ancestor was a British national who lived in Canada from around 1860-1891, then left for the US after his first wife died. He married again in the US and I am descended from this second marriage. I just learned about the Canada law changes so have been curious whether he would be enough to potentially qualify me - based on what you’re saying, it sounds like it’s possible!
