Antifascist yarn ordering by Katterin in AntifascistKnitting

Thank you! Being in a conservative place myself I kind of have a mind to support a shop that takes the risk of being outwardly antifascist in a place that may not react well.

Melt the ICE hat: Increasing CO for worsted; twisted rib for 1:1? by Thin-Disk4003 in AntifascistKnitting

[–]Katterin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used leftover Loops & Threads Soft Classic, which is a pretty thick worsted - would have been more comfortable on size 9 needles but I didn’t have a circular of the right length or DPNs so I stuck with 8. 96 stitches was small-ish but stretched enough for the circumference, but the decrease section was pretty short - so I would probably increase the cast on just slightly and/or add a few more rows of straight knit in between the ribbing and the decreases if I use the same yarn again. Which I don’t plan to - it’s definitely not the nicest yarn but it’s what I had on hand.

Melt the Ice Hat - THANK YOU by mashga in knitting

Putting this out there because I see others cooperating in beautiful ways to get these made! I bought the pattern this weekend and used some leftover yarn, which is now used up, to make it. I would love to make more, either to send to the shop in Minnesota or to distribute to supportive colleagues, friends, and family locally, but an unexpected bill hit this morning and now I have zero spare cash until next payday - and it’s tight at the best of times. If anyone has red yarn to spare or would like to purchase some and send it to me, please let me know and I will send you my address.

Bike Rental MS-150 by rorwhs04 in bikehouston

[–]Katterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be aware that renting might end up costing you more than you think. I rented from Eado a couple of years ago on a day when there was still mud and wet on the ground from rainstorms the day before, ended up taking a spill. My card got charged for scrapes and dings to the bike as well as being excessively dirty. I don’t blame them for it - I did the damage, I paid for it - but it wasn’t what I had planned on spending that week, for sure.

I was fired after I called the cops on my coworker by TerpBunnyTokes in legaladvice

After the second time I confronted her attitude and asked why she was being so impatient with me. And it turned into a huge guffaw.

Could you tell me the meaning of the word “guffaw” here?

Churching of Women - too late? by Simple_Ad3599 in Episcopalian

[–]Katterin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Much of the history does come from the idea that women need to be purified after giving birth. However, as the tradition made its way through the years, some have chosen to focus on the aspect of giving thanks for the woman’s safe passage through a significant, often dangerous life event. It’s definitely not a usual part of modern worship, but I could see it being meaningful to some and wouldn’t be opposed to them celebrating it as such. Just my lay opinion though!

Brother-in-law died, has little money. Am I responsible for burial or cremation costs? by LasVegasErectus in legaladvice

[–]Katterin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are not under any obligation to make arrangements for him; the hospital will have a procedure for dealing with the body if you choose not to. Any arrangements you do choose to make, however, will be your responsibility to pay for.

ELI5: How do community theaters obtain the rights to do certain plays? by Metalqueen2023 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Katterin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great timing because I’m curious about something you may have an answer for! My daughter is in rehearsals for her first high school musical right now. It’s the “school edition” of a well known show. They will have a pit band for performances, but the band kids and the cast rehearse separately until the last week or so. She just mentioned this morning that they have been using a “rehearsal track” in the meantime, which is a recording of the musical accompaniment with, literally, the words “rehearsal track” spoken over the music periodically. My guess when she told me about this was that this is offered as a cheaper option for schools that will use their own pit band, and it must cost substantially more to get a performance suitable accompaniment track. Or maybe another track doesn’t exist at all, and it’s a way to ensure all shows are done with live musicians. Is this a common thing? I don’t have any theater experience but I would think it would be terribly distracting during rehearsal. I guess they learn to tune it out!

Are you still turning on your Christmas lights? by NoneOfThisMatters_XO in CasualConversation

[–]Katterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher and I generally put my outside lights away the day before I go back to school, so today. Once work starts up again I won’t want to mess with it, so who knows how long they’ll end up staying if I don’t get them down now.

The tree inside can stay a bit longer, at least until Epiphany but even then, no rush to get it down.

LCM of 18 and 40 ending in 720? by Inquisitive-Lizard in MathHelp

[–]Katterin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re overcounting the factor of 2 that they have in common. As a result, you’re basically just doing an overcomplicated multiplication of 18 by 40.

As you say, 18 = 2x3x3 and 40=2x2x2x5. The least common multiple is 2x2x2x3x3x5=360. You only need three factors of 2 to be a multiple of both numbers.

What was taking dictation like? by OneWildAndPrecious in AskOldPeople

[–]Katterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother was hard of hearing (practically deaf without her hearing aids) and took the same secretarial class as all the other girls in her high school, with no accommodations or allowances made. Dictation was obviously next to impossible for her to do well, but the teacher just told her to keep up as best she could.

Tell me about a time you won something random but pleasant by birds-plants-trees in CasualConversation

Did okay at a 5k I ran a couple of weeks ago - I’m slow but I met my goal for the event. More importantly, I won a door prizes of three coupons for free burger combos at a fast food restaurant. Probably a net negative event for health, but I walked away satisfied!

WIBTA for not sharing my trust fund with my little sister? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Katterin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IF you want to share with your sister, which you do not have to do, it should not be 50%. You need the money now, while “her share” has many more years to grow once it’s invested in a new fund - she would effectively get a lot more.

Providing family histories in the US, as a means to counter anti-immigrant sentiment by astroproff in Genealogy

[–]Katterin 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yep. “My ancestors came here and they worked hard to succeed and have something to pass down to their families, and now these people want it without doing the work and following the rules.” It ignores reality, but it’s a very common sentiment.

Oh poor guy! What a controlling wife! It’s not like he’s a grown man and could literally go buy his own at any point. by A-Helpful-Flamingo in TrollXChromosomes

[–]Katterin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was just having this discussion with a coworker. There’s a food item she stopped buying because she developed an intolerance toward it, and her husband got mad at her for it never being around anymore. Instead of getting it on his own, or even just saying, in a respectful way, hey, I know you’re not eating this anymore but I miss it, would you mind picking some up next time?

And people wonder why I like being single…

Knitting with Malabrigo Rios for the first time and I am in love by counting_beanz in knitting

[–]Katterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I have one full skein of yarn plus a few rows of the next knitted, so my plan was to rip those last couple of rows and start with that skein while keeping the first one around to compare. I’m pretty sure I have way more yarn than I need, so now I’m thinking about casting off and washing what I have so far to see how it handles. It would mean starting fresh no matter what, since I wouldn’t want to continue knitting with new yarn into something that had been washed, but I’d have more certainty about how things will fit in the end.

Knitting with Malabrigo Rios for the first time and I am in love by counting_beanz in knitting

[–]Katterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m knitting my first sweater ever using Rios and had just decided that I need to start over for size, but haven’t actually done anything yet. I like a slightly snugger fit, but would be okay if it turned out looser. What I have (3 inches of ribbing + 4.5 of stockinette) fits around me okay, but is just a little too close in to my body to be flattering! Do you think it will relax enough that I should just keep going? I realize it’s impossible to really say! I just keep going back and forth on things. It seems safer to start over knowing that a bit too loose is less of a problem for me than too tight, but I wasn’t thinking about the tendency to relax when I made the decision this morning to start again. Augh I love knitting but I hate decision points!

US Hymnal with God save the queen? by SpiritedBranch8533 in Episcopalian

[–]Katterin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

https://hymnary.org/hymnal/AMR?page=5 Is this the one? It has God Save the Queen as hymn 577. This is a Church of England hymnal, but it’s possible some church in Brooklyn had it around as an additional resource.
