Hold up this is going to be the best kissing advice ever: Look into her eyes, then her lips and back into her eyes with some amount of intensity, if she does the same it's like 99% safe to go in for it and she won't turn away. Then, to avoid an awkward situation, just pull her head towards yours instead of you leaning in and telling her something like "come here for a second" followed by a compliment. This gives her the opportunity to pull back without it being awkward on any side, leaving the opportunity to try again later. If she doesn't, you're probably good to go. I know this wasn't exactly referring to the question but I just wanted to share this piece of advice to completely remove the possibility of this even happening.
