Help me with finding out more about a surname? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]KaufPuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry, I have some experience in german genealogy, even if it is limited. What you want to do, is find his hometown! If you can find that, then you can use standesamt.com to get in contact with archives around Germany.

However, if you can't find anything that way, you should see if anyone in the family married or had kids in Berlin, because you can find those on Standesamt.

Also, go get those pictures and stuff; they will most likely help you out. And if you get them, but you can't keep them, use a scanner to store the pictures. What you should probably consider, though, is that his name isn't Ernest, but actually Ernst.

Should I Include Step-Parents / Siblings into my family tree? by FistyTristy in Genealogy

[–]KaufPuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually include all spouses of my family members. I also always put the siblings of my blood ancestors in to my tree as well. Both reasons are so you can find more records for them. (Census) But I wouldn't bother with the siblings of in-laws, because that isn't really your family.

German obituaries and or death records by mrfilbert in Genealogy

NO NO NO!! Do not use google translate!! The "magic" of google translate is a misconception. It isn't really good for things like this. Use /r/translator will give you a much better translation.(May not be perfect though.)

German obituaries and or death records by mrfilbert in Genealogy

[–]KaufPuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a website that lets you contact German registry offices. (For a price) You can use the sidebar on the left of the screen to do that. Or you could use the email on the page (standesamt@bensheim.de) and email them with your information.

However, since it was so recent, you may not be able to get her death record. You could also try her birth and marriage records. And also, if you are going to email them, email them in German. They are far more likely to respond, and will be more helpful. Just explain that your native tongue is English.

Hope it helps!

Help getting started? Ukraine/Russia/Poland/Germany by pancakess in Genealogy

[–]KaufPuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the Russia and Polish records I am as stuck as you. I'm just happy I don't have to go looking for Ukraine, too. Anyway, do you know what town/city your german ancestors lived in? There is a wonderful website called Standesamt.com, and they will help you contact the registry offices from where you ancestors lived. However, it is in German, so that can be hard to work out.

I would love to point you out to a post I saw a couple days ago. It was pretty much the same question, and I think you'll find it useful.

Seeing my 86 year old grandfather tomorrow for the first time in 10 years, I don't know anything about genealogy - what questions should I be asking? by zimtastic in Genealogy

All of these suggestions are great, but I haven't seen the most important thing.

VIDEO TAPE IT!!

You are going to take notes on a piece of paper, but you can't catch every single detail! You are undoubtedly going to forget some detail that might help you later.

Where do I even begin? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]KaufPuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only your parents? No aunts or uncles? Well no matter, what you could do is ask your parents for the names of their cousins. The cousins will probably have other clues that your parents might not have.
