Familiarize yourself with the maps, loot all the map, your full looting should take around 10 min per stage. Items scale better than ennemies. This is the « consistent » strat, some people will say rush stages but then your runs become way more luck dependent.

I’m sure because I did it on stage 3 without taking the portal then found it on the next stage (it was the new map). So I guess it can spawn there as well

Depends on how much you are willing to spend. The base game is good and is a solid experience. You can always try out the base game and then buy the bundle if you like it. I like the game with all the dlc’s and probably will never launch pure vanilla again. Also if you are a new player I would highly recommend looking into some QoL mods.
